Cigar Accessories

When it comes to cigars, there are a few accessories  that will separate the aficionado from the casual admirer. Some might regard cigar accoutrements as frivolous toys, but when it comes to a truly fine cigar these "must haves" will ensure that your smoking experiences are pleasurable and delicious.

To start a home collection you should secure:

Humidor and Hygrometers
  • A humidor  is a climate-controlled environment that preserves optimal humidity levels for storing your cigars.
  • A humidor can range from a small box to an entire room.
  • The humidity levels must stay at 70%.
  • Desktop humidors  can store up to 150 cigars and come in a beautiful array of wood finishes from cherry to mahogany.
  • Some even have glass covers.
  • Full-size cigar cabinet humidors  can hold up to 2000 cigars.
  • You may also be interested in a wine/cigar combo  humidor.
  • A hygrometer is a tool for measuring the humidity level, so you don't want to skimp on this. Precise measurements are crucial to maintaining an ideal cigar environment.
  • You may also need humidifying solution  or gel  for your humidification system.
Proper Lighting Technique
  • You should never use the standard Bic lighter  that you buy in five packs at the checkout lane.
  • Lighter fluid notoriously alters the flavor of cigars, and if you think a free pack of matches will do the trick, keep in my mind that the sulfur tip also changes the flavor.
  • There are only two acceptable forms of fire to light your cigar.
    • A wooden match, which is then used to light a small plank of wood and then your cigar
    • A butane lighter.
  • Butane lighters  come in many different styles, but they are nice alternative if you don't feel like toting around matches and small planks of wood.
Cigar cutter
  • You need a nice, even opening for the front end of your cigar.
  • A nice cigar cutter  saves you the trouble of having to gnaw at the end.
  • The cutter is the only true way to get an good opening.
  • Also, this way you don't have unsightly and unpleasant bits of cigar wrapper and tobacco getting stuck in your teeth and throat.
Cigar Ashtray
  • A proper cigar ashtray  is not only an aesthetic addition to your home or office, but it ensures an enjoyable smoking experience.
  • Although it is a debatable accessory, there is nothing worse than trying to rest your cigar in an ashtray that is not designed to accommodate its girth.
  • As this is not a cigarette, knocking of part of the burning end makes it burn unevenly, ruining the cigar towards the finale.
  • It is also a great way complement the even cut you achieved with the cigar cutter, so that an even burn is never an issue.
Cases
  • Perfect for toting your cigars and keeping them safely protected.
  • Most often you will find leather cigar cases
  • Cases like the model shown are suitable for carrying two or three cigars. However, if you want to tote as many as 15 you should opt for a larger box, either wood or plastic.
  • Wood cases  are usually cedar lined Plastic versions sometimes come with an internal built-in humidification device. Such models are not only crush-proof, but also waterproof.
