by lengli

Unless you work retail at a mall, the Christmas season is one that is so magical that everyone loves to deck the halls and get jolly.  When you're relaxing with a mug full of eggnog, gathering the family around to watch a holiday classic, or wanting some background viewing as you're trimming the tree, Christmas films are one of the easiest ways to get in the spirit.  However, there are so many choices that sometimes it can be overwhelming.  If you're looking to see something new, trying to start a new family tradition, or appeasing your children with cartoons , we can help you find the perfect movie to match your mood.  Happy Holidays from ShopWiki!

The Best Holiday Films

According to Moviefone.com, these are the top 25 best Christmas movies of all time.  Some may be no-brainers, but there are those that will surprise you, we're sure.

A Christmas Story  (1983)
Bob Clark

If watching this for 24 hours straight every year on TBS isn't enough, then you might want to pick up your own copy.  It's totally worth it though.

It's a Wonderful Life  (1946)
Frank Capra

Despite an undeservingly saccharine reputation, this film, featuring Jimmy Stewart  at his finest, is marvelously dark and complex.

Miracle on 34th Street  (1947)
George Seaton

If your town's department store Santa actually turned out to be the real thing, how would you react?  Would you really be able to believe?

Scrooged  (1988)
Richard Donner

This kooky adaptation of A Christmas Carol  stars the hilarious Bill Murray  as a ruthless TV exec who learns the true meaning of Christmas.

White Christmas  (1954)
Michael Curtiz

Bing Crosby ,Danny Kaye , and songs by Irving Berlin : if that doesn't equal amazing, then you better un-grinch yourself before the 25th!

Elf  (2003)
Jon Favreau

Will Ferrell  playing an adopted elf makes this a delightfully zany addition to the genre.  And listen for Zooey Deschanel 's singing debut.

Christmas in Connecticut  (1945)
Peter Godfrey

This tale of mistaken identity stars Barbara Stanwyck  as a Martha Stewart -esque poseur forced to manufacture a country Christmas.

Home Alone  (1990)
Chris Columbus

One of the most excruciatingly painful ones here: Macaulay Culkin devises booby traps to chase off burglars intent on robbing his house.

March of the Wooden Soldiers  (1934)
Gus Meins  and Charley Rogers

This Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy  musical (originally released as Babes in Toyland ) has been a holiday staple throughout the decades.

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation  (1989)
Jeremiah Chechik

The third Vacation  installment stars Chevy Chase  and Beverly D'Angelo  as the Griswolds, but don't forget Cousin Eddie .

A Christmas Carol  (1951)
Brian Desmond Hurst

Also known as Scrooge , this is regarded as the best take on Dickens' novel.  Alastair Sim  as the notorious antihero is particularly praise-worthy.

Holiday Inn  (1942)
Mark Sandrich

Crosby and Berlin do it again, this time with the help of Fred Astaire .  This is actually where the song "White Christmas" was featured.

The Nightmare Before Christmas  (1993)
Henry Selick

The unrivaled Tim Burton  cowrote and produced this stop-motion film about Jack Skellington , the Pumpkin King of Halloween Town.

The Bishop's Wife  (1947)
Henry Koster

Cary Grant  stars as Dudley the angel, sent to help a troubled clergyman, but a love triangle ensues with--you guessed it--the bishop's wife.

Love Actually  (2003)
Richard Curtis

This British ensemble piece arguably has an awful lot going on, but eight romantic comedies are better than one, wouldn't you say?

Die Hard  (1988)
John McTiernan

Though not the most intuitive choice, if you're not a fan of the typical holiday fare, you'll love Bruce Willis  blowing up terrorists on Christmas Eve.

The Shop Around the Corner  (1940)
Ernst Lubitsch

Imagine falling in love with your pen-pal, and then discovering that he or she is one and the same as your nemesis in "real life."  Awkward....

The Dead  (1987)
John Huston

Huston directed his daughter Anjelica  in his last film (released posthumously), an adaptation of a short story from James Joyce's Dubliners .

Bad Santa  (2003)
Terry Zwigoff

The screwball Coen brothers  delve into Christmas fare with this movie, starring Billy Bob Thornton  as an alcoholic, thieving mall Santa Claus.

The Santa Clause  (1994)
John Pasquin

Is Santa Claus immortal or can someone new inherit the title?  This Tim Allen  comedy shows how a new Kris Kringle is called into service.

Gremlins  (1984)
Joe Dante

It all starts with a bizarre Christmas present: a creature named Gizmo, whose care involves an awful lot of (soon to be broken) rules.

Joyeux Noël  (2005)
Christian Carion

This Oscar-nominated French film details the true stories of the Scottish, French, and German Christmas ceasefires during WWI.

The Muppet Christmas Carol  (1992)
Brian Henson

Yes, it's another adaptation of the famous story, but it's the only one with Kermit ,Fozzie ,Miss Piggy ,Gonzo , and the rest of the bunch.

We're No Angels  (1955)
Michael Curtiz

Humphrey Bogart  being funny?  Who knew!  A trio of escaped convicts meet a family in need of help, and a delicious Christmas dinner ensues.

The Polar Express  (2004)
Robert Zemeckis

Though this one is infamous for having unintentionally creepy-looking animation, the story is based on a well-loved children's book .

Children's Classics

Christmas just wouldn't be the same without these timeless classics: they're the films and TV specials that you've watched for years, and new generations are falling in love all over again.  However, there is plenty of room in this category for new favorites too, but it remains to be seen if contemporary hits like My Friends Tigger and Pooh: Super Sleuth Christmas Movie  or Merry Christmas, Drake and Josh!  will stand the test of time.

A Charlie Brown Christmas  (1965)
Bill Meléndez

From Charlie's pitiful tree to Linus' retelling of the Christmas story to the infamous "Peanuts Dance" (Google it), this is a national treasure.

The Original Television Christmas Classics  (1969)

All the best Rankin/Bass hits: Rudolph ,Frosty ,Santa ,the Little Drummer Boy , the Bumble ,the elf  who wanted to be a dentist....

Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas  (1966)
Chuck Jones  and Ben Washam

See the original Christmas scoundrel (if you don't count Scrooge) and his legendary assault on Whoville.

Mickey's Christmas Carol  (1983)
Burny Mattinson

This adaptation was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Short.  And a Disney Christmas is really the best kind of holiday.

It's a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie  (2002)
Kirk R. Thatcher

If you can't get enough of the Muppets (and who ever could?), the gang is back again with another adventure.

More Favorites

While these choices might not go down in history as the best Christmas flicks of all time, they're sure a lot of fun, and are guaranteed to get you saying "Ho, ho, ho!" in no time at all.

Babes in Toyland  (1986)
Clive Donner

This TV movie starred Drew Barrymore  and Keanu Reeves  at their 80s best.  It's not on DVD yet, but you can still find some VHS copies out there.

Trading Places  (1983)
John Landis

Eddie Murphy  and Jamie Lee Curtis  are hysterical in this satire, and Dan Akroyd  is absolutely priceless in the dirtiest Santa suit you'll ever see.

Better Off Dead  (1985)
Savage Steve Holland

This cult comedy fave features John Cusack  as a down-on-his-luck teen.  Watch out for the most nontraditional (read: worst) Christmas ever.

Ernest Saves Christmas  (1988)
John R. Cherry III

Ernest P. Worrell, played by the much missed Jim Varney , has to bust an innocent Santa out of not only jail, but solitary confinement.

Pee-wee's Playhouse Christmas Special  (1988)
Paul Reubens

One of the best "This is for kids--oh no, wait, no it isn't!" holiday specials ever.  And Charo  is in it!

Jingle All the Way  (1996)
Brian Levant

Yes, California, this is what Arnold Schwarzenegger  did before you elected him to be your governor.  We think this is a more significant legacy.

Four Christmases  (2008)
Seth Gordon

Critics panned it, but the public loved Vince Vaughn  and Reese Witherspoon  playing a couple with way too many holiday visits to make.

A Smoky Mountain Christmas  (1986)
Henry Winkler

OK, it's Dolly Parton  and it's directed by the Fonz .  If this doesn't make for pure holiday magic, then we simply don't know what to tell you.

Eight Crazy Nights  (2002)
Seth Kearsley

Adam Sandler's  animated foray into holiday films is a rather rude look at Hanukkah, but Sandler fans wouldn't expect anything less.

Black Christmas  (2006)
Glen Morgan

All right, a holiday horror movie!  And it's a remake of Bob Clark's 1974 cult hit , so you'll have another scary option after you're done.
