Generally speaking, Christian rock music is a genre of rock played and written by Christians, mostly Protestants, who focus lyrics on their faith. That said, the degree to which they express their religion and faith through their music varies. Some bands will sing directly about Jesus and God while others will only include religious themes in the undertones of their songs. Many of the more popular groups have aligned themselves with the contemporary Christian music scene (CCM), attempting to veer away from some of the controversy and criticism they often receive about the ironic combination of rock music and Christian teachings. Whether they are attempting to create a new form of praise, to express their faith or just to entertain doesn't seem to matter much to their fans, as all of these bands have gained tons of popularity throughout the United States.

'''''12 Stones''''' is famous for creating music that is thematically focused on God and Christianity rather than lyrically. Almost all of their songs are about the Christian faith but they include few direct references to God or his teachings. Their name for example, according to an interview with ''Rolling Stone'' is a reference to the twelve disciples of Jesus but this is not directly stated. The band offers up a postStones'>The Only Easy Day Was Yesterday''. Their most recent recording, "We Are One" has yet to be entirely released.
'''''Disciple''''' was created in 1992 by a group of high school friends who wanted to express their faith and themselves through heavy metal Christian rock with lyrics clearly referencing the teachings of their faith. With the purchase of a few of their CDs, you receive a bonus disc with a message attached saying "Give this CD to someone who is not saved!" If you can't already tell, they are a collection of boys highly dedicated to spreading the message of their God. They have released seven albums over the last decade entitled ''
My Daddy Can Whip Your Daddy''. Their most recent album, ''Horseshoes and Hand Grenades'' is set to be released in September of 2010.
'''''Lifehouse''''' doesn't consider itself to be a religious band even through many of their fans and prominent websites like ChristianRock.net disagrees. All of their songs are spiritually based and like 12 Stones, are primarily focused on Christianity. In an interview with ''Rolling Stone'', the lead singer acknowledged this saying that they "didn't want to be labeled as a 'Christian band,' because all of a sudden people's walls come up and they won't listen to your music and what you have to say." They have however acknowledged the religious teachings and themes in their popular grunge music and have continued to write songs full of these lessons. They have released five albums to date entitled ''
''Smoke and Mirrors''.
