Christian Music
When you think of Christian music, your brain may automatically go to boring choir music sung during church. However, inspirational music no longer has to be so stuffy. There is a wide variety of contemporary Christian music that spans across all genres, including rock and metal, pop, country, and even hip-hop and rap. While many artists have dealt with Christian themes over the years, they are not necessarily considered Christian music. This is where the line often gets blurred. Bands like Flyleaf and As I Lay Dying draw their inspiration from their religious beliefs, but neither identifies themselves as a Christian band. Generally, all the artist's songs should lyrically relate to Christian faith.
Christian Roots
Yes, we all know Christian music originated from hymns, gospel, and choir music. But when did Christian music move out of the church and into your iPod? Contemporary Christian music began in the '60s and '70s during the "Jesus Movement." Free loving hippies began making Jesus music, singing about love and peace. The first albums to be considered Jesus music are ''Upon This Rock'' by Larry Norman and ''Mylon, We Believe'' by Mylon LeFevre. Its roots were in rock and folk music. Other popular artists who launched the genre were 2nd Chapter of Acts, Evie, and Barry McGuire. By the 1980s, artists such as Amy Grant, dc Talk, and Jars of Clay found themselves on mainstream radio.
