Cat Toys

Is Fluffy getting a little restless? Whether you cat stays indoors or gets to go outdoors, it will need some toys. Cats like to run, jump, leap, and scamper. And they can either find things in your house to play with or you can get them some toys. Here's a quick guide to cat toys to get you thinking about what would be right for your cat and your home. Remember to get a diversity of toys to keep kitty content, but not so many that it will grow bored with all of them at once (in fact, it's a good idea to hide all but one or two toys at a time, then switch).

Things to Consider

Play With Me!

Bounce and Pounce Toys

  • Throw these toys to Fluffy and watch the games begin.
  • Make sure your home can take the running, jumping, and rebounding.
  • Anything with a bell inside it is magical.
  • The best bounce and pounce toy of them all is the ball.

Catnip Toys

  • The treat works Fluffy up into a bit of a frenzy, followed by a feel-good buzz.
  • Catnip will sometimes refresh after a run in the clothes dryer.
  • Otherwise, buy some catnip, it's cheap.

Toys on Strings

  • With a self-propelling motor or a person on the other end, dangling the string lets Fluffy pretend to be a predator.

Interactive Toys

  • These shake, rattle, and roll.
  • Can mimic bugs, spiders, and snakes, Fluffy's ancestor's natural playthings.
  • Don't be surprised if your cat is underwhelmed.

Squeaky Toys

  • A little squeak can make Fluffy that much more interested in a toy. It's like having your toy beg for mercy.

Alternative Toys

The funnest toys aren't always/usually the most expensive or elaborate. Ask anyone who's bought a motorized toy only to see it sit, unused, while the cat chases shoelaces. These may seem unorthodox in cases, but they are time-tested and some are relatively cost-free. Note: A cat should never be left to play with these toys without supervision.
