Cat Litter Boxes

Cats are great. They don't need to be walked or let outside to do their business, and they take care of cleaning themselves. All you need for your indoor cats, aside from food, love, and toys, is a litter box. And, of course, there are several types available depending on your needs. The most important thing to remember, though, is that the box needs to be big enough that your cat can turn around in it and cover up its waste. Take into account how big your kitten will grow and plan accordingly. And remember your litter box is only as good as the litter you put in it.

Litter Box Styles

Tray Litter Box

  • Least expensive.
  • Simplest to use (for you and your cat).
  • Takes up little space.
  • Lets litter scatter on the floor nearby.
  • Children and other pets can get into it.
  • Traditional models smell; newer antibacterial versions help reduce odor.

Hooded Litter Box

  • Take up more space.
  • Help contain odor.
  • Need frequent cleaning.
  • Keeps other pets and kids out.
  • Offers cats privacy.
  • May be small for some (enormous) cats.
  • Good for travel.

Self-Cleaning Litter Box

  • Automatic cleaning helps keep odors away.
  • Convenient and not very messy.
  • More expensive.
  • May scare the cat.
  • A less expensive version uses a series of sifting trays or a rolling mechanism to divide fresh litter and clumps.
