Brief History

The Hindi language film industry. Bollywood's rich tradition stretches back to the early decades of the twentieth century. It developed, for a time, in the shadow of the seemingly unstoppable Bollywood had overtaken every other domestic and international motion picture industry in the world, in terms of annual number of productions and audience attendance.  Today, Bollywood's filmic output is estimated at roughly 800 to 1000 productions per year.

Post-Independence: A Golden Age

India achieved independence from Great Britain on August 15, 1947.  Less than three years later, on January 26, 1950, the Republic of India was proclaimed.  This period coincided with the advent of the Golden Age of Hindi language cinema, during which time Bollywood productions began to receive widespread international acclaim, winning several prestigious cinematic awards.

Parallel Cinema

In 1946, Chetan Anand's film ''Neecha Nagar'' won the overall grand prize at the Satyajit Ray. The work of Chetan Anand and the filmmaking team led to the creation of Parallel Cinema, an alternative genre dedicated to depictions of socioeconomic and political importance within Indian society.  It eventually gave rise to the Indian New Wave of the 1950's that corresponded with the hugely influential French New Wave and the Italian Neorealist movements.

Modern Bollywood

The pantheon of Bollywood films is extensive, making the creation of an overall top ten list no enviable process.  From the beginning, these movies have been based on the formula of interweaving elaborate musical scores and highly choreographed dance routines into the fabric of the narrative arc.
