Boat Spark Plugs Buying Guide

At some point in your life, your boat's motor gave out on you and no manipulation of the spark plugs would make it function. At that point, you probably realized it's not the motor, it's the spark plugs. At this point, you are perusing this guide to find some of the best spark plugs out there. We'll throw in some free advice, too, for the right boating enthusiast.

How To Replace Spark Plugs

You're not buying spark plugs for your boat just to look at them. You're going to have to replace your old ones. Here's how: * You're going to need a screwdriver, gapper, a socket wrench and a spark plug wrench. * If you're dealing with an outboard engine motor, remove its cover and find the dastardly plugs that done you wrong. * Take your bitterness out on them by removing them as angrily as you want, but don't be blinded by rage: make sure you know which wire goes with which plug. And make sure to read the plug's size and brand while you're at it. * Hopefully, you haven't thrown away the owner's manual. If you have, shame on you. The rest of this procedure is probably going to get pretty difficult. Don't know how you can live with yourself. ** Actually, I'm just giving you a hard time. You can figure out the gap size not just from the manual, but from spark plug manufacturers, too. ** The gap size is important because it determines how far the spark plug's tip will be from the central electrode. If you don't get it right, you'll end up right back here, looking for new spark plugs. ** The gapper will help you set the size for the gap according to the manual or the manufacturer. * When you put the new spark plug in the hole vacated by the offending plug, you can hand-tighten it. But don't overdo it and make sure you don't harm the threads. * Now you can put the wires back on with the proper spark plug and replace the engine's motor cover. If you didn't get it right with the wires, your boat will blow up as soon as you start it, kind of like in the Godfather. ** OK, it won't blow up, but it won't start either. Or if it does, it will run weirdly. Which is just as bad, isn't it? * Start your engines!
