The Beastie Boys are a rap trio that have influenced generations old and new alike. Their music has lasted over 20 years and still sounds fresh and new, moreso than some of the rap stars of this generation do. "Intergalactic" will always get a party jumping, and "Ch-Check It Out" is a perfect tune to help get your break dancing on. They have been listed by Rolling Stone as one of the top 100 greatest artists of all time and Sabotage as one of the 500 greatest songs of all time. Proving white boys can rap way before Eminem was ever cool, The Beastie Boys were some of the most influential artists in the genre.
The First 10 Years
The Beastie Boys actually started out as a punk band in the early 80s. By 1984 they broke away and signed with Def Jam/Columbia as the rap trio they are today. Made up of Michael "Mike D" Diamond, Adam "MCA" Yauch, and Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz, they released their first albums and took the rap world by storm.
* Licensed to Ill (1986): Their first album. It was the first rap LP to ever top the Billboard charts and Columbia Records' fastest selling debut album to date. Nine million copies have been bought and enjoyed, and not many people can say they've never heard hits like "No Sleep "Til Brooklyn" or "Fight For Your Right".
* Paul's Boutique (1989): The Beastie Boys second album received mixed reception when it came out and didn't sell as well as Licensed to Ill. At this point they had left Def Jam and signed with Capitol Records.
* Check Your Head (1992): Check Your Head returned to their punk roots stylistically, playing their own instruments. Singles "So What'cha Want" and "Pass the Mic" came out of this album.
* Ill Communication (1994): The fourth album, Ill Communication was the second to go triple platinum and gave us the hit song (and later, awesome video for) "Sabotage".
The Last 10 (plus) Years
* Hello Nasty (1998): Hello Nasty won two Grammies for the Beastie Boys, for Best Alternative Music Album as well as Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group for "Intergalatic", which is one of their most highly praised songs.
* To the 5 Boroughs (2004): Coming back after a 6 year hiatus, To The 5 Boroughs both speaks of New York City after 9-11 and also gets political, commenting on the Presidency at the time.
* The Mix-Up (2007): This album is a bit different, as it's made up of all instrumental performances. It won a Grammy for Best Pop Instrumental Album.
* Hot Sauce Committee, pt 1 (2010): To be released sometime this year, this will be the Boys' 8th studio album.
