Baby Food

Although babies are tiny versions of adults, they can't eat adult foods. During the early stages of infancy, babies need soft and pureed food because they lack teeth. However, if you're a new parent, knowing what foods your baby should eat is difficult. As your child grows up, the kind of food he/she eats varies. A newborn's diet consists of breast milk or instant formula while a toddler will feast on vegetables, meats, cereals and cookies. Before making the switch, get to know what foods are suitable for your baby.

Formula

Back in the day, there were only three types of baby formula to choose from: a cow's milk base, elemental, and soy. Today there are over seven, including a lactose free formula, formulas for premature babies, and those supplemented with DHA and ARA. Iron fortified formulas should be made with cow's milk and lactose as found in Similac Advance and Nestle Good Start Supreme. Elemental formulas contain no lactose, but do have an easy digestible protein called hydrolysate. You can find this in Nutramigen and Pregestamil. DHA and ARA are recent additions to infant formulas, which are also found in breast milk. These supplements aid in an infant's development. Enfamil Lipil, soy and premature formulas contain these additions.

Cereal

When your child is ready to make the switch to solid foods, cereal is always the best transition. Now, we're not talking about Frosted Flakes or Lucky Charms. Baby cereal has a consistency similar to oatmeal. One option is rice cereal, which contains grounded up rice and it's a great source of fiber, vitamin B, and thiamin. Gerber's Single Grain rice cereal can be mixed with breast milk, water, juice, or formula. Like rice cereal, oatmeal is also finely grounded and provides the same nutrients. Beech Nut's Oatmeal Baby Cereal contains vitamins B, D, and E.

Organic

If you want your child to eat healthy why not start him/her off at an early age? Organic baby food is becoming more and more popular among parents looking for a nutritious way to feed their babies. Earth's Best makes everything from baby formula to purees to toddler foods while Plum Organics' baby food is cooked, then frozen to preserve the dish's flavor, nutrients, and texture.
