Oil Filters and Accessories
There's nothing worse than driving to work or school or the local Kenny G concert and realizing that your car is screaming at you for an oil change. When you get your oil changed, they also need to replace the oil filter. Not changing your oil and oil filter can result in a damaged engine and a sad Kenny G for having one less fan at the show.
The Importance of the Filter
So why is an oil filter so important? How could it possibly damage my engine? Since you won't take my word for it, let me explain.
* Your oil filter is located in your engine block, the lower part of the engine.
* An oil pump will circulate oil to your engine, but before it gets there it passes through the filter.
* The filter's job is to catch particles so they don't not reach your engine and damage it. Contaminants on the engine equals bad news.
* The second job of the filter is to retain oil when the car is turned off. This is done by the anti-drainback valve.
** When your car is turned off, all the oil goes to the bottom of the engine, leaving the top parts un-lubricated.
** However, when you start the engine again, this small amount of oil retained will quickly be released to the top part of the engine.
* Your oil and oil filters should be changed every 3,000 miles or every three months. After that, your filter will start to become clogged.
** A clogged filter will prevent new oil from getting to the engine and lubricating it. Lubrication is essential for keeping your engine parts properly working.
** A damaged engine will cost a lot more to fix than a $20 oil change.
Filters and Accessories
Besides purchasing the right size filter for your car, you'll also want quality brands. Some top rated brands to consider are Purolator, Mobil 1, Wix, Baldwin, and K&N. These brands will not only trap all those unnecessary particles, but they won't drain your wallet either.
If you're planning on changing your oil filter at home, you'll need a few other tools to get the job done:
* '''Oil Filter Wrench''' - A specially designed wrench for removing the oil filter.
* '''Oil Filter Bracket''' - This will prevent any oil leakage.
* '''Oil Filter Cover''' - Just like the name implies, it covers the filter so oil doesn't spill out.
* '''Heavy Duty Funnel''' - This will come in handy when changing your oil.
* '''Oil Filter Crusher''' - This bad boy will crush your filter like it was a beer can, helping to reduce your waste costs.
* '''Oil Filter Magnet''' - Install this in your filter to trap any metal particles from entering your engine system.
