Timbuktu (the inspiration for the title for his 1994 album ''Talking Timbuktu''), he was raised in a small town called Niafunké (which turned out to be the title of his 1999 album). He is most well known in Africa, but because of his extensive career, he attained much international success as well.
Touré began writing and playing music in the 1970's and recording studio albums in the 1980's; his claim to fame, according to Wikipedia.org is that he was "the first African bluesman to achieve widespread popularity on his home continent." His oeuvre can be classified as blues or folk, but also as "world" since he incorporated traditional African music into his repertoire. He is known for frequently playing the guitar and the njarka, a small fiddle instrument from his home country of Mali.
