Acoustic Guitar Strings
In order to get the maximum sound quality from your
guitar pick ready and let's take a look at how to choose the right strings.
Types Of Strings
*
softer and provide less strain on your fingers.
**
heavier and they provide a better strumming sound.
*
Bronze Strings will give off a clear, bright tone. This is the most popular choice for guitarists and will give the best sound.
**
Phosphor Bronze Strings are a type of bronze strings that have a warm tone with a long hold.
**
80/20 strings are another type of bronze strings with a brighter and richer sound than the phosphor strings.
*
Coated Strings will give a rich tone with a long retention.
*
Brass strings will produce a much harsher and sharper sound because these strings are more brittle than the others.
The String's Gauge
Different gauges will produce different sounds so it's important to consider this when choosing your strings. There are 4 main gauges:
*
light are the easiest to play and provide the least amount of tension. They are good for players who alternate their tuning and bend notes. It is also easier to play chords because you do not have to apply as much pressure. However, these strings are not as loud and tend to break much easier.
*
Heavy gauge strings will produce a louder sound due to their thickness. They will also sustain a note much longer and will stay in tune longer. The major disadvantage is that these strings place a lot of stress on the guitar and can even damage older, weaker guitars.
*
Medium gauge is in between and therefore, the best of both worlds in terms of gauges. They are thick enough to produce a loud sound but light enough not to put added stress on the guitar.
