Call me geeky, but I think comic books are great. Yes, they have a reputation of being loved amongst the nerds in our society (thanks to shows such as
The Incredible Hulk, most of us usually refer to the massive blockbuster films that pull in millions of dollars world wide. The thing that fascinates me is that many people are unaware of the origin of these amazing films and characters. This guide focuses on comic books and graphic novels. You might come across a title or character you are familiar with through a film or television series, but there are many more wonderful and exciting characters who so far remain hidden in the myriad of comic book pages.

While there are more than three brands that publish comics, it is fair to say that the industry is dominated by Marvel, DC and Image comics. According to

If you don't know much about comic books but are a fan of superhero movies, chances are your favourite characters originated from a Marvel comic book. While Marvel might be the highest selling brand when it comes to comics, DC is extremely popular and has introduced the world to just as many popular superheroes. DC comics were founded in the 1930s and since then, generations have been captivated by superheroes who work typical day jobs, but save the world at night. DC also boasts an impressive array of popular superhero villains including the Joker and Catwoman. If you want to read a good DC comic, I would start with Batman as it is a simple yet classic comic.

Image Comics
Because they're not as old as Marvel and DC, Image comics are not as well known in the comic book world. Having said that, they are in the top three highest selling brands, and several video games and movies have been based around popular characters. Cartoon Comics
Many popular cartoon series have either originated from a comic book series or have a comic based on them. While they don't sell anywhere near as many copies as Marvel, DC or Image, they are still very popular. They can usually be found in news agencies and in the daily newspaper.
