There are a couple of methods for sanding down a surface. It can be done by hand or with an Sandpaper has different grades depending on its abrasiveness.  Often moving from a coarse sandpaper to a fine grain will give the best results, as the coarse paper will remove most unwanted material and the finer grain paper will fix anything left behind the more abrasive paper.

Finishes

So the wood is smooth and stained the perfect color, but now a finish needs to be added to protect it and seal in all your hard work. There are three common choices; wax, varnish and lacquer. There are also brushes just for applying these different types of finishes. * Wax finish is easiest to apply and gives a natural result, but is not as durable. * Lacquer is the hardest to apply, but drys quickest and is easy to repair by just adding another coat. * Varnish is highly resistant to abrasion, water, and sun damage. It is however, slow drying so projects can't be finished as quickly.
