Sports Medicine

As any good ice pack or two.  Joking aside, sports injuries are all too common, especially among dedicated athletes who push themselves past their body's ability to recover. While serious injuries should be treated by a medical professional, a good athletic trainer will have both the supplies and the basic medical knowledge to tend to an injured player. Compresses, gauze, ice packs, sutures, bandages, antiseptic solution, and latex gloves are all essential equipment for any responsible coach. Fortunately, completely sports medicine kits are readily available on-line at very reasonable cost.    Whether you're serving a community service sentence teaching a sports agent learning to believe in himself, you will have all the equipment you'll need when disaster strikes.

Basic Equipment

Most coaches are required by law to be CPR and first aidstocked emergency first aid kid available at all times. A good first aid kit should include the following:  *cold packs * Bandages (in different sizes) * Elastic bandages for wrapping sprains or splints * Adhesive tape * Scissors * Sterile gloves * Antiseptic spray or cream * Ibuprofen or aspirin *isopropyl alcohol *cotton balls * Small plastic bags (to hold ice cubes) * Blanket * Tweezers It's also a good idea to anticipate the sort of injuries you are going to be dealing with based on the sport. Combat and contact sports will likely incur impact trauma, track sports coaches will be primarily dealing with blisters and overextended muscles, and baseball players will probably need extra bandages for those home run slides that don't quite work out. Finally, it's good to have sunblock and hydration material handy for any sport played in hot weather.

Braces and Supports

After an injury, many athletes discover that they need to wear braces on their joints to provide support while they practice. Obviously, it's foolish to continue training before giving yourself a chance to heal, but if your doctor approves and you want to get back into the game, it's wise to invest in some support equipment to take the strain off sensitive parts of the body. As with all sporting equipment, you want to make sure that any brace you purchase fits comfortably on your body. Anything too tight or constricting can aggravate the injury, while anything too loose isn't going to do much good.  Braces are available for a wide variety of body parts. * Ankle * Knee * Elbow * Wrist
