Here is something us ladies can all agree on: most winter boots are not cute. Sad, but true. When it comes to harsh winters, it's all about function over fashion. Unless you like your toes to freeze off, that is! To make sure you are getting your money's worth, there are some important details to look out for when it comes to purchasing a new pair of cold weather boots to get you through winter. Save yourself some cash and buy your boots wisely!
What to Look For
There are so many terms and technical details that can sound confusing or maybe even a bit boring while shopping for some legit cold weather boots. As stated above, depending on your winters, you may not need everything below to be top notch in the warming department. Here is a simple breakdown:
* '''Insulation '''- This is what keeps your toes warm and cozy. Some cold weather boots have a removable lining which is a plus for chilly days when there are no foot high piles of snow to walk through. Thinsulate insulation is a popular choice amongst cold weather boot brands. It's thin and it gets the job done without the bulk. Most ladies are a fan of shearling lining. It's soft, plushy and feels like you are walking on clouds for days.
* '''Outsole '''- Do yourself a huge favor and get boots with waterproof outsoles. Unless you live where your cold winters miraculously don't include precipitation, trust me on this one. Wet and cold are not a fun combination for your feet. Also since they are waterproof, they are most likely going to be rubber. The rubber adds extra traction to prevent slip and falls that are just far from graceful.
* '''Upper - '''This part covers your lower leg area. Ideally, it should be at least water resistant. Some fashion boots, like UGGs, are not water resistant but still a favorite. Nylon is also a popular choice. Any material to repel moisture from getting into your shoes is a plus!
* '''Lower '''- Ever step into a pile of snow and your foot immediately got cold and sort of wet feeling? This part is important because it is what keeps your feet staying dry and warm. If you get a lot of snow, the more waterproof the better!
Things to Consider
* Large, fluffy, Yeti boots are cute if that is your thing. They are also kind of warm, so that's good. However, if it rains, your fluffy boots will have the weight of two small sopping wet dogs, one on each foot.
* A rain boot does not equal a cold weather boot. They may be water resistant and appropriately priced, but once your feet dip into a nice cold puddle of melted ice, they will be getting quite the wake up call!
* Shearling vs. faux shearling: they are both squishy, warm and fuzzy, but yes, there is a different between the two: the range of temperatures your feet can withstand! If you choose not to wear shearling because you are a friend of the animals, then go for Thinsulate instead.
