We know you love your dog, we really do. But sometimes, you both need your space, and a dog house is the way to go. Comfy, warm traditional houses or silly novelty ones abound; it's not too hard to find something that suits your needs, and your dog's.
Doggy Housing
There are three basic materials your dog house can be made of, wood, metal or plastic. Wooden is the most traditional; it's well insulated and comes in a variety of styles, from a classic pitched roof to loft versions that give pets a view. Metal houses are also insulated and are chew proof, but plastic is the cheapest; they're lightweight and come in fun shapes like igloos or barns. They aren't nearly as well insulated as wood or metal houses.
Regardless of the house's make, the most important aspect of a dog house is its size. Dogs prefer to sleep in den small, cozy places that can be heated by their own body heat. Ideally, the house should be big enough for Rover to lie down, turn around and stand up comfortably.
Consider adding heating pads to this new den. In extreme weather situations, like heat waves or blizzards, it's best to simply bring the dog in, but a temperature controlled house is just the ticket for canines who prefer to remain outdoors.
In the Dog House
Getting your dog to sleep in a house and like it can be tricky. Here are some tips to help smooth the transition along.
!
* It takes time for animals take to adjust to change. Start early by getting them used to the outdoors at night, in the summer if at all possible.
* Keep the dog house close to your own house at first, where the typical human sounds and smells linger. This way, man's best friend won't feel cast out.
* Try to make their new den seem more familiar and cozy by putting old clothes or blankets inside.
* If all else fails, try food. Nothing says home to a dog like food!
