* The patent for the pencil sharpener was created in 1848 in France for Bernard Lassimone's invention. * 19 years later, Thierry des Estwaux designed a more advanced mechanical pencil sharpener. * In the United States, Walter K. Foster invented a sharpener in 1855 for which he received a patent. * After the improvement of the wooden pencil, with the lead in a more rounded shape, the invention of several types of sharpeners took off. * There were different ways that oldsharpener'>sharpeners implemented more than one of these methods: ** Sandpaper or steel files ** Milling cutters made of steel with several cutters on their edges ** With the use of one blade or several blades * This may be surprising to some, but electric pencil sharpeners have been in existence since 1917. Even cave people needed sharper pencils for their crude wall drawings. * It is around this time that the development of sharpeners slowed down, even if Europe continued to put out new and innovative products well into the 60's. We think they got the hint, though. * Not all carpenter's pencil, to this day, is still sharpened with a knife. That's so retro.
