* If the chains are just dirty you'll still want to keep the bike working at optimal performance. Clean the chain with some sort of
biodegradable cleaning solution. It might be best to use a sturdy old
towel instead of a paper towel because you don't want fibers getting caught in the gears.
* There might be some oil or grease on the chain. Don't miss those nooks and crannies! If this doesn't do the trick you might want to go the whole nine yards. Get a bucket and
toothbrush or other small brush and really scrub it down. Some
brushes or tools that make this a little easier.
* Take the chain off the chainrings you intend to clean and scrub those good.
* The derailleur can be wiped off carefully using the rag as well.
* To clean the cassette you need to remove the
cogs and that they're rotating as you wipe so you don't miss anything.
* To ensure everything is running smoothly after all this cleanlubricant'>bike lubricant and wipe down the gears with it. You should be good to go.
