Motorcycle and ATV Drive Train Axles

Drivetrain axles are the shafts that connect the wheels to the halves" and connected using joints to keep the parts mobile and more flexible in steering and turns.

Applications of Axles in Vehicles

Different axles will be used depending on the driving mode. The axle's location is in relation to whether it is front or rear wheel drive. It can be used for driving and braking purposes as well as steering. In driving the live axles work in tandem with gears to transmit power whereas dead axles are used as support beams. Whatever set of wheels is not powered by the drive mode has a dead axle. * Front Wheel Drive: Front wheel vehicles primarily use a transaxle. A transaxle is a combination piece of the transmission, differential and axle. The actual axle as a separate piece is a split axle. * Rear Wheel Drive: These vehicles have the axle transmit power directly to the driveshaft from the engine. Bikes often use sprockets as "axles" for their motion. * 4-Wheel Drive: Both front and rear axles are actively moving to enhance control of the vehicle even more.  * Braking: In braking the wheels are normally stopped through the use of friction. Occasionally, however, when you want to avoid wearing down on your wheel brakes you can do engine braking. This means shifting to a low gear and easing up on the accelerator. When the engine slows down enough the steering axle
