Modern Living Rooms

By User:riverajessica @timeAndDate(1294856810) Stark. Clean. Bold. The modern living room is uncluttered: an exercise in robust simplicity. A seemingly easy look to pull off, the modern style can actually be quite disastrous without care and attention to detail. Much more sleek than cozy, this look can be well worth the expense and effort required to obtain it, as long as you have the right touch.

Modern Options

This severity helps distinguish the style from contemporary decor, which is softer and has more room to explore specific cultural motifs. A contemporaryLamp'>lamp and perhaps a single frame atop the side table.  Bauhaus and Mid-Century Modern are two basic styles within the modern interior design aesthetic that utilize those sharp, edgy characteristics. Whatever specific pieces you choose, keep things as simple as possible.  Keep your furniture low to the ground; it's best to keep all seating and surfaces at one level, so no one is reaching up for a drink or looking down at someone during a conversation.

Seating

The center pieces of any living room are the seating elements: couches, ottmans, throw pillows and so on. To create a room that isn't over the top or too over budget, it's best be subtle. A streamlined sectional sofa with an particularly sculptural chair, a Baha style chair with a Sebastian style sofa. Below are some suggestions for chairs and couches that would make great backbone pieces in any living room.

Chairs

While you don't have to get a designer chair, it is helpful to know major styles and chair with a little character; matching your furniture too closely can lead to a room that looks sterile and cold, (although the Modern look does express a bit of an emotionless flavor).

Couches and Sofas

With larger seating, it's easier to refer to design only, rather than designer. Generally, you want to stick to sleek and smooth, though of course comfort is also important.

Tables and Storage

Lighting

There is room in lighting for some amount of originality. Since you are limited to a handful of standlight'>recessed lighting in your wall or ceiling, though this can be very expensive to install.

Accessories

Ornamentation is not an essential part of the modern experience. That said, a few odds and ends would not be unheard of. Geometry is useful here, with many design elements such as candles, vases and frames taking on basic shapes like circles, squares or melted, distorted versions of them. This is where you can really expand and plant an eye popping, stand-out piece, something abstract on your walls or on your tiny square coffee table.
