Ranked by the American Film Institute as the greatest female star in the history of American cinema, Katharine Hepburn is the epitome of a classic Hollywood star. She holds the record for the most Best Actress Academy Award wins (she has four of them) and has also been nominated eight other times. Her work has been recognized at many other award ceremonies including the Golden Globes and the Tony Awards, proving the business' adoration of both her and her work. It's a little ironic actually that this outspoken actress with an infamous anti-Hollywood attitude took home so many Hollywood awards, but as soon as you see her work, you'll realize immediately that she deserved every one of them, if not more.
Popular Hepburn Films
'''Morning Glory''' be actress whose good looks draw more attention than her acting and who rejects romance in favor of her career. This is both one of her earliest and most popular films and continues to impress and amuse audiences, even today.
'''Bringing Up Baby''' spirited young lady who happens to have a leopard in her possession. This hysterical film was very well reviewed by the critics of the time and began to widen Hepburn's repertoire into the expansive and versatile collection it would eventually become.
'''The African Queen''' - Hepburn received one of her many Oscar nominations for this 1951 film in which she plays a prim spinster missionary character in Africa around the time of World War I. In the film, she convinces a drunken river boat captain (played by the famous Humphrey Bogart) to use his boat to blow up a German ship. The film itself is filled with humor, sentimentality, and brilliant acting and is arguably one of Hepburn's best films. At age 77, she wrote a book about her experience filming entitled ''The Making of The African Queen: Or, How I Went to Africa With Bogart, Bacall and Huston and Almost Lost My Mind'', which became an immediate best seller, proving her worth once again as a great American Actress.
'''Guess Who's Coming to Dinner''' - Hepburn also won the Best Actress Academy award for this ground breaking 1967 film in which she played Christina Drayton a liberal upper class mother who's daughter is involved in an interracial relationship. The movie follows the family's experience coming to terms with the relationship and demonstrates some the best acting in Hepburn's career.
'''The Lion In Winter''' - Hepburn also took home one of her many Best Actress Oscars for this 1968 historical costume drama. In the film, she plays Queen Eleanor, who is kept locked away by her husband in Salisbury Tower and struggles for her freedom and independence throughout the film. One of her most impressive performances, this movie also exemplifies Hepburn's determination to break down gender stereotypes and to live as an independent woman in a restricting society.
Some Other Hepburn films include ''
Keeper of the Flame.''
