Character actors always seem to get gypped. They are constantly brushed aside as people who just have funny voices, funny looking faces or individuals who can do little more than read lines well. Though this stereotype may be true for some, many of these actors are some of the most talented in the industry. John Candy for example, is one of those actors. Even though he wasn't always in the spotlight, throughout his career he did more than just read a funny line: he brought stories and characters to life, successfully entertaining millions of audiences each and every time. If you're ever looking to watch a funny movie but don't want to sacrifice good acting, watch something featuring John Candy. It will leave you entirely satisfied.
Popular Candy Films
'''''Splash''''' owner of a wholesale fruit and vegetable business in New York City. The plot focuses around Tom Hanks and his relationship with a mermaid named Madison but each time Candy enters the frame the focus seems to shift. Perhaps as expected he's very funny throughout ''Splash'', what's more notable is his impressive addition of depth and emotion to a character that could have easily been played with few dimensions. The film itself was an incredible success as was Candy's brilliant breakout performance.
'''''Little Shop of Horrors''''' - Candy's role in this 1986 musical comedy was tiny, but (for me at least) was one of the highlights of Candy's career. In the few minutes he is on screen, he plays a strange disc jockey who hosts the Seymore, the protagonist, on his radio show. Like Bill Murray's famous performance in this same film, Candy's performance was not lost in the long story. In fact, it remains one of the moments that always makes people laugh (sometimes even if they just think about it).
'''''Planes, Trains & Automobiles''''' - Candy costarred with Steve Martin in this classic 1987 comedy about two, unsuspecting friends and their accident prone mission to get back home. Candy plays the cheerful but overly talkative and unfortunately clumsy Del Griffith who takes on the responsibility of taking Martin's character back home. As the plot, and the characters, twist and turns you'll laugh out loud at the hysterical performances of both Martin and Candy and, as always, will also be impressed with Candy's ability to add touching depth to a plot that was potentially shallow.
'''''The Great Outdoors''''' - Candy played a quirky father in this 1998 movie about a family camping trip where nothing seems to go right. Whether you have fonder memories of the talking raccoons, the 109 year old man or the bears sitting on the roof of Candy's car is up to you, but be sure not to miss Candy's wonderful performance where he once again proves his prowess as both a talented actor and fantastic comedian.
'''''Uncle Buck''''' - Candy took the title role once again in ''Uncle Buck'', the favorite of many Candy fans. In the movie, Candy played "that uncle," a man who drinks and smokes, makes money off gambling and drives the worst (but coolest) car in town. When his brother's father in law suffers a heart attack and needs to leave town, Uncle Buck (Candy) steps in to watch three children and assumes the role of temporary guardian, shoes Uncle Buck never saw himself wearing. It's a family friendly, laugh out loud film that has become a classic among Candy fans, and is often considered one of his most successful performances as both an actor and comedian.
Other popular Candy films include ''
Once Upon a Crime''.
