The youngest of the Jackson clan, Janet Jackson is at the top of the list when it comes to top female pop stars. Even though in her early career she was doubted as just another Jackson with a recording contract, she came into her own with her unique music and often politically and socially aware lyrics. Funky outfits, and crazy tours turned Janet into both a phenomenon that people couldn't stop watching and a worldwide sex symbol and an icon in the gay and lesbian community. She also has found herself wrapped up in controversy from a secret marriage, to the infamous Super Bowl "wardrobe malfunction". Whatever Janet did, the world knew.
From Just Another Jackson With A Contract...
* Her debut self-titled album came out when she was just sixteen in 1982. She received a lot of criticism as being just another Jackson with a recording contract, and having a limited vocal range.
* Dream Street, her sophomore album, was worked on by her brothers. Marlon co-wrote two tracks and Michael, Tito and Jackie sang back up vocals.
* Janet decided to leave her father as a manager and team up with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis to produce Control, her break out album. It won four American Music Awards and was nominated for Album of the Year at the Grammy Awards.
* Rhythm Nation 1814 was released with more socially conscious lyrics. It is the only album in history to produce number one hits in three separate calendar years as well as the only album to have seven hits in the Top 5.
* The Rhythm Nation tour is, to this date, the most successful debut tour of any artist. At this point Janet was truly a super star.
...To Pop Superstar
* Her 5th studio album was named "janet." and is supposed to be pronounced "janet, period". It was a way to separate herself from her last name and her brothers' success.
* Two years before The Velvet Rope's release, Janet was dealing with long-term depression, which translated into the album.
* All For You was Janet's first album of the new millennium, as well as the first to get a parental advisory sticker because of some of the content.
* Janet's last three albums, Damita Jo (named so after her two middle names), 20 Y.O. and Discipline have not done as well as her earlier works, but still have held up solidly.
