Internal Hard Disk Drives
Shopping for a hard drive might be the easiest part of
PC component shopping you'll do. There isn't too much to know but there are a couple things to check on and decide.
First, let's talk about busses. A
A long, long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away people used Parallel ATA (PATA) buses, but eventually Serial ATA came along, and it's been the standard for more than a decade now. Essentially, there are 3 bus protocols you'll want to consider when shopping for a hard drive
*
SATA I hard drives are most common.
*
SATA II motherboard.
*
EIDE hard drives are rare, but still on the market
Next, you'll want to make sure you've got enough space in your computer case for a new hard drive. You'll need an open internal drive bay (usually located about centerinternal'>airflow and cooling.
Shopping Around
Now you're all set and you've only got one thing left to decide: How much memory do you need? There are two types of computer memory:
RAM (Random Access Memory) and ROM (Read Only Memory). When it comes to hard drives we're talking about ROM. Hard drives range in size from 20 GB to 2 TB (1 TB = 1000 GB). Of course, more memory also means more money, but it's always better to have one 500 GB drive than two 250 GB drives. Anyway, the price difference between larger and smaller drives is comparatively small, so it usually pays to buy a larger one now.
We can shop around in two ways. First, here are hard drives organized by their manufacturer:
*
Seagate Hard Drives
*
Western Digital Hard Drives
*
Maxtor Hard Drives
*
Fujitsu Hard Drives
*
Hitachi Hard Drives
*
Quantum Hard Drives
*
CMS Hard Drives
Next, we can shop by how much memory the drive has:
*
30 GB Hard Drives
*
100 GB Hard Drives
*
250 GB Hard Drives
*
500 GB Hard Drives
*
1 TB Hard Drives
*
2 TB Hard Drives
Notice that the price differences are not very great according to size.
