Indie Music

Indie Music is not a genre that describes sound-style. It does not categorize music nor does it group artists, bands, and songs into a division based on similar riffs, melodies, voices, and so on. Music is "indie" when an artist or a band declares itself separate from any major commercial record label and instead puts out music autonomously through in a DIY kind of way. However, it is possible for artists to start out "indie," and then sign with a major record label, or vice versa. This accounts for a variance of indie or nondiscovered kind of music. The term "indie" is the shortened version of "independent: "Indie Music" is really "Independent Music."

Why Be Indie?

The DIY approach offers the an indie musician greater liberty in his or her music production and marketing. They are able to withhold a greater amount of profit made from their own music sales. Indie alternative rock very much follows the technical definition of what it is to be indie. Indie alternative rockers are musicians that fit within the alternative rock genre but have not signed with a major record label. Today, alternative rock is seen as more mainstream. 

Indie Folk

Indie folk followed indie rock as it developed in the 1990s. You could even go as far as calling indie folk a branch of indie rock that evolved into its own genre. Indie folk is sometimes described as having more "complicated instrumentation, lyricism, and multi-voiced harmonies." Indie folk bands often participate in large festivals and concerts such as Coachella in California and Bonnaroo in Tennessee.
