The first upright vacuum was invented in bags.
Spangler gave one of these Suction Sweepers to his cousin, Susan Hoover. She used it in her home and was so impressed that she told her husband, W.H. Hoover, who purchased the patent from Spangler in 1908 and retained Spangler as company Superintendent. Spangler continued to patent several further Suction Sweeper designs until his death in 1915. By 1912, the product exploded on an International level, with sales being made to Norway, France, Russia, Belgium, Holland and Scotland.
Today, the products sold under the Hoover brand vary greatly. In the United States the Hoover brand is used exclusively to sell floor care products, while in Europe Hoover branding appears on products that include refrigerators; as well as floor care products.
Other products in the Hoover line include filters.
