Traditionally, mugs don't really come with saucers. Hybrids of coffee mugs and teacups can, but mugs are bulkier and can stand on their own. They're perfect for that big ol' cup of joe in the morning because they're heftier than the traditional delicate china cup. You can hold a mug by its handle or around the body because they're usually so thick they're a bit insulated from the heat. And in the early morning, anything that's less breakable and requires less attention is a huge benefit. Household mugs can be a bit more ornate than your typical diner mugsome having an enamel decoration, or a fancy base or lip.
Mug Safety
Always be sure to check and make sure that your ceramic mugs are microwave safe. If they have any rubber or plastic rims added to them, then it is less advisable to place this type of mug in the microwave since there are recent studies saying that heating plastics in the microwave can break down some harmful toxins that you don't want getting anywhere near you. Also, if you ever have to glue a favorite mug back together, keep that mug out of the dishwasher and microwave as well.
