If you live in an urban area, chances are you'll be using gas log with a safety pilot

Gas Log Size

Just because the log will fit inside the fireplace, doesn't mean it's the right size.  If you get a log with a safety pilot, for example, you'll need at least 4" between the log and the wall on each side.  The first step is to measure your fireplace so you have something to work with when figuring out size.  Here are a few tips: * If the gas log you want to buy has a safety pilot,  you have to be inside the fireplace to get an accurate measurementfor the height measurement, you need to stand under the center of the chimney.  * You should measure the height, the width at the front of the fireplace, and the width at the back and the depth. * Once you know the front width of the fireplace, subtract 8 inches to get the width of the gas log.  If you do that, you'll have 4 inches on either side and you'll be able to clear the wall.  If you are going to buy a gas log with an automatic pilot or a remote control, you'll need an additional 3 inches on each side, for a total of 7 inches on each side. * As long as you don't have a gas log with a safety pilot, you can get away with only 2 inches on either side of the gas log.
