Choosing a Mic

Ultimately, your ears will make the final decision about which mic to buy.   But there are some rules of the road.  First of all, what kind of sound do you plan to record?  If you play music, are you playing drums, or are you digital wireless microphone. Here are a few specialized type mics to whet your appetite: * The Shure dynamic microphone is a low cost solution. * The Shure 577B model is best for mobile communications and close talk. * Try a dual dynamic and condenser mic for an all in one model.

Tips and Types

There are a few different dynamic mic designs.  Moving coil mics are a bit like loudspeakers.  Moving coils may be built for various parts of the sound spectrum. The AKG D model is good for recording bass over treble.  But of course, to really record music, you'll be using several types of mics at one time.  You may remember ribbon mics as those Ribbon mics pick up the sound from two directions, in a pattern called the figure eight. Here's a tip: If you are recording cymbals with a ribbon mic, you might consider setting it on its side.  This will eliminate other sounds in the environment from entering the mic. Another adjustable microphone change its response to the sound that comes in.  With some, you can even program for a figure 8 pick up pattern, or a unidirectional pattern.
