* A smooth, solid finish to prevent splintering and other hazards.
* Guardrails on all four sides, with minimal gaps.
* Lead-free finish/paint to prevent poisoning
* A ladder (if applicable) that can support your child's weight comfortably and that is easy to use. Flat boards are preferred.
* The bed itself should be able to handle your child's weight.
