Description Under the direction of Russ Freeman (equally skilled as a guitarist and as a keyboardist), the Rippingtons succeeded in combining jazz-influenced solos with light, funky rhythms and pop sensibilities. This particular CD has selections from eight of the group's GRP recordings, plus a pair of previously unreleased tracks ("Garden of Babylon" and "Sapphire Island") newly created for the sampler. Computer-generated tickets were the name of the game in the '90s. More business-like in their just-the-facts-ma'am presentation, these mementos are nevertheless from some of the absolute best concerts of the era and are testaments to how the rock concert event swelled from small venue to stadium and eventually settled upon a mixture of the two. Find older venues like the Greek Theatre and the Warfield among the Arco Arena, Cow Palace and Oakland Arena selections in these offerings.

On Let It Ripp , the contemporary jazz masters known as the Rippingtons offer a mixed exhibition of musical paintings that freely roam their "live" aesthetic more than on any previous studio project. Recorded with no outside musicians except for the horns of Jerry Hey , Gary Grant , and Steven Hoffman , this excellent collection of 11 original songs written by Russ Freeman exemplifies the culmination of 17 years of being on the road. Special guest saxophonist Eric Marienthal (whose killer chops have...
