I wished to go in and look at him but I had not the courage to knock. I walked away slowly along the sunny side of the street, reading all the theatrical advertisements in the shopwindows as I went. I found it strange that neither I nor the day seemed in a mourning mood and I felt even annoyed at discovering in myself a sensation of freedom as if I had been freed from something by his death. I wondered at this for, as my uncle had said the night before, he had taught me a great deal. He had studied...

The Art of Racing in the Rain — $10.28
I'm old. And while I'm very capable of getting older, that's not the way I want to go out. Shot full of pain medication and steroids to reduce the swelling of my joints. Vision fogged with cataracts. Puffy, plasticky packages of Doggie Depends stocked in the pantry. I'm sure Denny would get me one of those little wagons I've seen on the streets, the ones that cradle the hindquarters so a dog can drag his ass behind him when things start to fail. That's humiliating and degrading. I'm not sure if it...

The Devil You Know — $5.15
I couldn't help a rueful chuckle. There have been times when I've said some terrible things to Dominic, but he's never deserved them. When I'd first met him, he'd been a willing demon host, and I had despised him for being the kind of weak-minded, suicidal fool who was willing to give up his entire identity to host a demon. Because the human personality was (in all cases except my own) completely buried beneath the demon's, I'd considered the human hosts as good as dead. Many people—including my...

In the book's three chapters, Wiley treats three broad reasons for the failure of the Confederacy: weak political leadership, low morale among the populace, and four "internal influences" in the South. Those...

I must be mistaken. Francesca and I had made this plan on the day of my tearful departure. My greatest friend from university had promised to escape the clutches of domesticity to spend a lost afternoon drinking wine and catching up. Very frustrated with this company--can relate to many of the comments already posted! Placed an order August 27 and a week and a half later, I was expecting the order and received an email noticed saying the book was unavailable. I have emailed the company several times and have not received response. Of course there is no phone number to call (thank you to whoever posted the ecampus #). Today is September 12 and I still do not know what is going on, nor do I have the book. Will not do service with them again!
