Kathy Smith: Peel off the Pounds Pilates, Kathy Smith, DVD$9.99
January 06, 2009: If you read the description, Kathy Smith uses the foundational basis of Pilates. This is NOT a Pilates workout - there is no attention to breathing, no 100s, Teasers, Roll Like a Ball, etc. The lower body workout has the most Pilates based movements. The cardio is typical Kathy Smith. There is plenty of reference to using your Core and keeping your abs sucked in.

Far from the Madding Crowd, Everyman's Library Series, Thomas Hardy$1.99
Hardy's rustic tale of Bathsheba Everdean and her three suitors comes to life through Thorne's expert narrative performance. Hardy's works often change pace and character quickly, a point which Thorne uses advantageously to wind us through this insightful novel. Thorne's interpretation of the text removes the distance which so often exists between Victorian literature and the modern reader. Thorne's performance skills transcend age and gender. The listener can envision each of the workers as they...

Greatest Hits, Vol. 1, Toby Keith, Music CD$12.19
Five years isn't really a long time to generate 12 monster-size hits for a greatest-hits album, but that's exactly what Toby Keith did. From his first album in 1993 to the release of his first greatest-hits package in 1998, Keith has culled some of his best singles from the charts to create a 14-track ode. He includes only two newbies -- the deliciously suggestive "Getcha Some" and the achingly troubled "If a Man Answers." Those are the first two tracks on the album, so you can get them out of the...

Tales of a Librarian: A Tori Amos Collection, Tori Amos, Music CD$14.99
February 07, 2004: I ordered this cd several days ago, and I'm pleased to say that I'm not dissapointed!! I have been a "toriphile" for at least 5 years, and this new compilation of her greatest hits is absolutely the best!! I had the great opportunity to see her live at Radio City Music Hall in N.Y.C., and it was an out of body experience. She is in every sense of the word a true "musician". I love Tori Amos's music, and will never tire listening to it.

Doctors, Professors, Kings and Queens: The Big Ol' Box of New Orleans, Music CD$46.89
America's most musical city is a daunting topic for any collection, even a four-disc box set. From Dixieland, jazz, blues, rock 'n' roll, R&B, and funk to the Francophone world of swamp pop, Cajun, and zydeco to the folk musics of vodou and the Mardi Gras Indians, the Crescent City has a number of musical histories to tell. Fortunately, it also supplies a homegrown metaphor: gumbo. That savory stew of disparate ingredients is mirrored in the magpie assortment of music -- old, new, Cajun, and very...

The master trickster decides to use the rock to get the food stores from the rest of the local residents. Each animal is taken in turn to the strange moss-covered rock, says the magic phrase, and promptly falls asleep to have its food pilfered by Anansi. New York Times Guide to Essential Knowledge, New York Times$4.29
Want to ensure large sales for a reference book? Use the terms "essential" or "authoritative" in the title and invoke the name of a venerable library or media institution. To be sure, some books that bear these trademark titles are indeed useful. But it is disturbing when reference book blurbs become book titles; the pedantic and overwritten introduction certainly further hypes this desk reference. With its 700,000 words of text, it straddles the gray area between almanac and encyclopedic...

Moyers on Democracy, Bill Moyers$1.99
Veteran journalist and author Moyers (Moyers on America, The Power of Myth) staunchly attacks conservative government as one of "millions of Americans who are restless to get on with their revolution." In this volume-a collection of speeches, addresses, talks and lectures from as far back as the '80s-Moyers argues that participatory citizenship breathes life into American democracy, and whatever undermines active citizenship threatens to destroy the system. Moyers reminds readers that the U.S. stands...

The Mysterious Affair at Styles (Hercule Poirot Series), Hercule Poirot Series, Agatha Christie, Audio Book$39.95
I have always found myself fascinated by a man who is described in this book as "hardly more than five feet, four inches, but carried himself with great dignity. His head was exactly the shape of an egg, and he always perched it a little on one side. His moustache was very stiff and military. The neatness of his attire was almost incredible. I believe a speck of dust would have caused him more pain than a bullet wound." This description was given by Arthur Hastings who is narrating the book. Colonel...

Hollywood Singing and Dancing: A Musical History - The 1970s, Shirley Jones, DVD$19.99
Take a trip back to an era when musicals were evolving into something much more than fluffy dance-a-thons with happy endings in this documentary hosted by Academy Award-winner Shirley Jones. Disco and rock were transforming the musical as audiences knew it. All of a sudden it wasn't about families dancing together in rolling hills, but kids rebelling in the classroom, strutting disco dancers, and sweet transvestites with a taste for intergalactic mayhem. In this film, Jones offers an in-depth look...

Terry Jones' Barbarians, Terry Jones$2.41
In the Monty Python film Life of Brian, a member of the People's Front of Judea asks, "What have the Romans ever done for us?" (apart from, of course, the "sanitation, medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, the fresh water system and public health"). The director of that movie-and now popular historian-Jones (Who Murdered Chaucer?), along with Ereira (The People's England), now answer the question: a bit, but nowhere near as much as the barbarians did. Jones attempts to...

Breast Milk - a Medical Dictionary, Bibliography, and Annotated Research Guide to Internet References$26.73
In March 2001, the National Institutes of Health issued the following warning: "The number of Web sites offering health-related resources grows every day. Many sites provide valuable information, while others may have information that is unreliable or misleading." Furthermore, because of the rapid increase in Internet-based information, many hours can be wasted searching, selecting, and printing. Since only the smallest fraction of information dealing with breast milk is indexed in search engines...

Invisible Acts of Power, Caroline Myss$3.00
Now, in this inspiring new book, Myss expands her message about power in an entirely new spiritual direction. With characteristic originality, she explains how we become channels for divine grace and a conduit for miracles through kind, compassionate, generous actions, or, as she calls them, invisible acts of power. When we act compassionately, without a private agenda or expectation of credit or reward, God works invisibly, anonymously through us. And as we move from visible acts, such as giving...

2001: A Space Odyssey, Keir Dullea, Blu-ray$26.99
August 27, 2009: To be honest, I always thought this movie was terrible. I thought it was overrated, too slow, and just the most boring thing in the world. That is, until I finally watched it all the way through from start to finish and then watched it AGAIN a second time in the same sitting. WOW. The thing that amazed me the most about this movie were the special effects. Yes, they're a little dated and from the '60s, but they still look amazing and more believable than other sci-fi films...

I Am America (And So Can You!), Stephen Colbert, CD Audiobook$13.49
On the title page of the galleys of this ironically strident, annoying, repetitive, dishonest, priggish, self-congratulatory, exploitational, celebrity-driven, offensive -- and often extremely funny -- book, it says, in the credits, "Additional material: Ipsum Lorem." Do you know what that means? Well, I do -- now, A.G. (After Google). It's a two-word snip of dummy text -- meaningless Latin-sounding words used from the 1500s to this day by typesetters, to give the appearance of printed words without...

Draws on a range of American films, ranging from Public Enemy and Scarface to Gangs of New York, Goodfellas, and The Godfather. Explores...

The Supreme Genius of King Khan & the Shrines, King Khan, Music CD$11.69
Vice Records, the musical offshoot of the hilariously snarky Vice Magazine, compiles the best tracks from King Khan & the Shrines' career, piling together 16 of the boys' greasiest platters for The Supreme Genius of King Khan & the Shrines . Vice could be considered the perfect holding cell for the smirking Khan (often pictured in less than pants), whose image relies on tongue-in-cheek sexiness and whose lyrics revel in perverse humor. But beneath all the boisterous tomfoolery lies a surprisingly...

The Story of My Life, Helen Keller, CD Audiobook$35.95

Drawn Together: Season One, DVD$26.99
Drawn Together is a one-joke series, but the joke is pretty inspired: Take eight animation archetypes and confine them to a house Big Brother -style. The characters include Clara, a Disney-esque fairy-tale princess; Foxxy Love, a jive-talkin’ “mystery-solving musician” (whom Clara assumes is the “servant girl”); Ling Ling, a sociopathic Pokémon type; the aptly named Captain Hero; Toots Braunstein, a black-and-white heartthrob from the 1920s; Xandir, an ambiguously gay video game warrior; Wooldoor...

The Very Best of Death Row, Music CD$18.99
Released nearly a decade after the two-disc Death Row's Greatest Hits , the single-disc Very Best of Death Row is both somewhat necessary and a little bizarre. It's could be meant to right some wrongs of the earlier compilation (wisely including the original mix of Dr. Dre 's "Let Me Ride" and Warren G 's "Regulate"), or it's a roundabout way to welcome Petey Pablo to the fold (his "Off tha Chain," featuring Kurupt , closes out the disc as a bonus track). It's definitely not a complementary release...

1421, Gavin Menzies$3.07
A former submarine commander in Britain's Royal Navy, Menzies must enjoy doing battle. The amateur historian's lightly footnoted, heavily speculative re-creation of little-known voyages made by Chinese ships in the early 1400s goes far beyond what most experts in and outside of China are willing to assert and will surely set tongues wagging. According to Menzies's brazen but dull account of the Middle Kingdom's exploits at sea, Magellan, Dias, da Gama, Cabral and Cook only "discovered" lands...

Help! I'm a Volunteer Youth Worker, Doug Fields$1.99
May 09, 2004: Doug provides 52 great ideas for serving as a volunteer youth worker. The ideas range from the obvious to the amazingly practical (probably depending on how long you've already worked with teens!). It helps that this book can be read in one night (really!) and can be applied in small church contexts of almost any sort. The weakness of this book is that it doesn't have much to over beyond the ideas themselves. There are no case studies to illustrate the suggestions made...

Eye on Science Fiction, Tom Weaver$44.62
Some discuss actors such as Lon Chaney Junior and Bela Lugosi; others discuss particular films, among them The Flesh Eaters , The Atomic Submarine , and Night of the Blood Beast ; and still others muse on their careers and experience in general. The photographs from decades ago are better quality than the recent ones; so much for the march of progress. Weaver has been interviewing filmmakers since the early 1980s. The Uncrowned King of Swing, Jeffrey Magee$5.36
In this first comprehensive biography of jazz pianist, bandleader, and arranger Fletcher Henderson, Magee (musicology, Indiana Univ.) does an excellent job of placing his subject in the context of uncertain social changes in the African American community. He demonstrates how the transition from sheet music to records-especially those by African Americans-influenced the college-educated Henderson, who moved from Atlanta to New York City to become first a song plugger and then an accompanist...

Yanni in Words, Yanni$1.99
The platinum-selling electronic don t call him New Age instrumentalist Yanni tends to inspire strong opinions, and this ambitious autobiography, which Yanni calls a book about a life of challenges, lessons, dreams, and obstacles, is unlikely to change any of them. Yanni, with the help of Rensin (who similarly aided Tim Allen and Chris Rock with their memoirs), adopts a conversational, occasionally almost condescending tone, full of tics like Mind you and Can you imagine? . He recounts his idyllic...

More Jesus, Less Religion, Stephen Arterburn$1.99
Arterburn and Felton, co-authors of Toxic Faith, here supplement the warnings of their previous book with a more positive vision. In the past, Arterburn, in particular, has invited controversy by confronting problems of spiritual abuse and manipulation in evangelical churches and homes. This sequel focuses less on "toxic churches" and the extremes of spiritual abuse and more on the need for promoting "healthy faith" in evangelical faith communities. Arterburn and Felton describe healthy faith as...

N.O.R.E. y La Familia...Ya Tu Sabe, N.O.R.E., Music CD$12.39
About a year and a half after the unpredictable and underproductive rapper N.O.R.E. promised the album One Fan a Day with the Neptunes, Mariah Carey, and Beanie Sigel as his guests stars, the reggaeton-flavored N.O.R.E. y la Familia...Ya Tú Sabe appeared in its place. With a high-profile album in the can and the lucrative reggaeton train bringing everybody who rides it plenty of bling in 2006, there's every reason to suspect La Familia is an embarrassment waiting to happen, but it's hardly that at...

The problem is made all the more difficult by the large degree of individual neuroanatomical variation. Prepared by a leading expert in advanced...

The Literary Guide to the Bible, Robert Alter$9.50
July 19, 2009: Professors Alter and Kermode present an introduction to the Bible that celebrates literary qualities of scripture and serves as a fine counterpoint to traditional historical-critical study of the Bible. All contributors enriched my reading of texts. The essays have not aged. This is a great work for church and personal libraries. It rounds out what one learns from one volume Bible commentaries and study Bibles.

Christ and Empire, Joerg Rieger$14.64

Straight From Your Radio, Gold Chains$5.69
On Straight From Your Radio , Topher Lafata raps of his lyrical and sexual prowess over powerful jagged-edge electro; if he lacks the rapping talent of fellow indie-electronic MCs Gonzales and Cex , at least the productions are far better than anyone else doing similar material. His second EP, this one recorded for Tigerbeat6, isn't quite as extreme and inventive as the productions of label boss Kid 606, but it does represent an exciting middle ground between trad dance/pop/hip-hop and the twitchy...

Sagdeev, a physicist who directed the former Soviet Union's Space Research Institute from 1973 to 1990, played a crucial role in restraining a Soviet counteroffensive to the U.S. ``Star Wars'' program, thereby helping to forestall an acceleration of the nuclear arms race in space. This modest, anecdotal memoir provides a rare, valuable insider's look at the Soviet military-industrial machine. I have ordered from Barnes and Noble twice and wasn't happy either time. The first time it took about 3 weeks to receive the one book that I ordered. The second time I am still dealing with now. I ordered two books for my daughter for Christmas. The shipping was great. I got the order in about 1 week. The problem is that I only received one of the books that I ordered and it said they were both included in the shipment. I was charged for both books. After 3 emails and two phones calls I still haven't received the credit to my debit card that they keep promising me.

I just used the Barnes and Noble website to make an order, and it charged the credit card on which I had made a previous purchase, without giving me a chance to make a change. I have engaged in e-commerce with many companies for many years now, and have yet to find a site so awful to navigate. As well, when I called minutes later and attempted to cancel my order, I was told that I could not cancel my order, and had to have the card I had not authorized to be charged. I will have to go through the hassle of returning the package, because I was told their "system would not allow cancellations." When I called into their "customer service" line, there was the option to cancel orders, yet, when I finally got a live person, they said that that option is not available to anyone making any internet order. This is ludicrous, and I will not be shopping with Barnes and Noble again ever, for any reason!
