Why do I NEED a Gibson SG$200.00
A support act/opening act at the Pretenders concert last December just walked out onto a cold stage -a solo. She opened her case centre stage, took out her SG and plugged into what appeared to be a 20w Fender amp put there by the roadie. At the bottom of the mike stand she had one or two loop pedals. It was awesome. Her name was Adalita. She sang and sang... No covers, just her and this mellow tempo stuff with her SG.

What amp to get$99.00
A small modeling combo is more than adequate for a beginner, and it gives a good introduction to the different kinds of effects that are available (unless you're impatient and spend money like an idiot...ala moi :)). And while on the subject of the Vox VT series, you could even go the VT15 (15 watt model). I actually still have one of these kicking around and its a great little amp. And it does have a tube pre-amp, which is probably why it sounds way better than most modeling amps.

02 November 2010 - 02:25 AM$2,500.00
Have to agree with you here in spades....used to consider resale value a big deal and bought into all the Gibson pitch about it, but after buying new Gibsons and NEVER getting more than 75-80% of what I paid for them when I sold them, came to the conclusion that the resale thing is a bunch of hype at this time as the days of Gibson's (and other makes) increasing a lot or holding their purchase pricing is pretty much gone.....there are a lot of reasons for this, but that is a whole other conversation...

Does My New Taylor 816ce Need A Set-up$2,700.00
Daniel, I forgot to address the question regarding a set up...let Patrick take a look at it because he probably knows exactly what to look for. Taylor's suggested action at the low E string is 6/64" and I believe it's 4/64" on the high E string. If the action on the low E string is 8/64", that isn't within Taylor's specs, and a set up at an authorized Taylor repair tech would be free within the first week or two. If there are any questions on whether or not a set up would be covered, the guy to speak...

Gibson Songwriter Deluxe$3,300.00
I've owned a Gibson Songwriter Deluxe Studio EC for a couple years and the longer I own it the more I love it. I tried out a lot of guitars from several of the usual large production companies (Gibson, Taylor, Martin, Breedlove, Larrivee). My preference for playability was actually Martin's modified low-oval neck profile, but from a tone/sound preference I always came back to the SWD. One thing I've heard often about Gibson (and was the case on my SWD), the set-up out of the factory was not good...

So I ordered a Takamine$869.00
I haven't seen or played that one. I had to go back to a 2008 price list to find it, so it's likely been out of production for a couple of years. The list was $859 (up from $810 in 2007), which means the normal hang-tag would be about $600. At $200, that's about 24% of M.S.R.P ..... very good!

Who Says Guitars Are Expensive - Student Support Forum Home Page$299.00
Well, I'm no guitar snob. I have some I picked up for 35 or 40 bucks, and I have one I paid 2 grand for (it is a family heirloom. That is the only reason I bought it). It doesn't matter how much it's worth or how much you paid for it to me, just as long as you are playing guitar! In the famous words of John Mellencamp "forget all about that macho S--- and learn how to play guitar" I am a firm believer that some of the import guitars are as good as some of the Gibsons and Fenders I have played.Like...

Ibanez Guitar Thief$164.00
What a coincidence, I went to get my mail earlier today and stopped to talk to a neighbor for a few minutes. He was telling me that an officer he works with at the prison was busted for selling cigarettes to inmates. This guy thru away a $70k a year job with a 90% retirement and full benifits for what amounted to around $5k. Some people are so stupid you cant even feel sorry for them.

I was gonna buy him the 814CE but I couldn't do that cos it's expensive$2,345.60
I came across one of your posts on Acoustic Guitar Forum, and according to that post, your guitar teacher asked you to buy him the Taylor guitar in exchange for 16 months of lessons. In other words, it was not a gift as suggested in your original post. In that case I do not think you are a fool (as I said earlier) but I do think it might not have been wise, unless the total price you would have paid in lessons is substantially more than the cost of the guitar. Otherwise you are just committing yourself...

Playing with a strap$15.00
I use Levy straps on my guitars and Duncan (no reason) locks on the electrics. Though the electrics are set from the factory with strap pins already installed, I can't bring myself to drill into the Martins heel. I use that funny shoe string provided with the straps to tie around the neck on the acoustics above the nut with a clip gizzmo from planet waves to quick disconnect. I read somewhere (Martin website maybe) that the tanning process and color dyes on the straps can effect the finish on guitars...

Playing with a strap$15.00
Going through the same thing myself. I quickly understood that it's going to take some time until I'm at ease playing while standing as I try to shake off the initial shivvers. I'm discovering that it helps to raise da stool to the point where I sorta let my big hinie rest against da seat and sorta stand. Keeps me outta leg and shoulder shock, because, as I soon discovered, it's a disconcerting feeling when all at once I let the full weight of my guitar transfer via the strap to my shoulders. Uneasy...

Anyhow, since Dylan wags his tail all of the time, I've trained him to wag it at predictable rates. I give him beer when he does it right. I'm afraid I've made him into an alcoholilc. Anyhow, so now if I want 60 bpm, I say "60, Dylan" and he responds with wagging his tail at 60 bpm, and so on. My adice to you to get a German shepherd and tain him to wag his tail, just like Dylan does. Lotsa luck.

A fool & his money are easily parted$30.00
As far as aging or vintage guitars are concerned, I believe the affect is more pronounced with the sound produced by acoustic guitars. I've had the opportunity to play some vintage guitars next to their new versions and there is a distinct difference. I would not hesitate to buy certain vintage guitars in excellent condition because of this. Particularly brazilian rosewood acoustics. Most vintage brazilian rosewood guitars in good condition are a bargain (though still expensive) over new ones...

Low-Mid Price Guitars? - Student Support Forum Home Page$650.00
Would have to agree with this....You will retain a higher percentage of original cost on a used sale typically with the MIA Fenders than with the MIM Fenders, but thinking a Fender is going to appreciate is only hopeful at best....just too many of them made. Is there any other tube amps that anyone knows of with a built in attenuator? I really want to pick up a tube amp, but I am concerned about the volume. I have a Vox VT30 which also has a built in attenuator and its great, so is there any options other than the AC4TV? If not I might just not bother for now because I can get a similar tone out of the Vox I have.

That's how I look at these things. Trying to chase the absolute lowest price, and getting upset if it's offered cheaper at some time in the future, can make you crazey - - especially in the field of digital photography. Compare the specs and features of the camera you can buy today for $200 to what the same $200 would have got you two years ago. In 1993, I paid $11,500 (1993 dollars!) for a Minolta digital camera-body, with no lens, that had 1024 x 768 resolution, about 0.768 megapixels. Six...

Rockband 3 Fender Squier Stratocaster/Controller$280.00
On a separate note, this guitar is first and foremost a CONTROLLER!!! Yes, you can plug it into an amp and it will play, but believe me when I tell you, there were some shortcuts made in quality. I bought my son a real Fender Strat Squier and there is a HUGE difference in the quality between the "REAL" Squier and the "Controller" Squier. I have no desire to play the "Controller" Squier as a stand-alone instrument because to be quite frank, it sucks. The pickup is cheap as are the tuning pegs....

That still leaves me with some cash from selling my prospecting gear- Hmm, I need some stands :D

Rockband 3 Fender Squier Stratocaster/Controller$280.00
I think the actual frets are standard, but the neck is touch-sensitive so you can see onscreen where you are placing your fingers before you strum. Although I could be wrong about that, as there looks to be something on the frets where each string would pass over them. But, those could just be shadows so I don't know. The guitar is kind of limited though, as there is only one pickup and no tone control. (The black bar where the neck pickup would go is a button.)

What amp to get$199.00
I have the GDecJr 15w version that came in a starter kit. Someday I'll get something better than my Squier Affinity hooked up to it so for now I'm finding it hard to honestly evaluate. I also have a small 15w Fender Frontman and comparing the two, my critique of the GDecJr is that it has no plain channel. You have to pick an amp simulation, one of them being acoustic if you want the cleanest choice. Other choices are Tweed, Blackface, British, Metal, and Jazz. The Frontman only has two choices clean...

Electric Suggestion$1,099.00
The thing you learn as you keep playing is that you start to hear the difference between guitars after you've been playing for a while. Admit it you Fender guys thought that bullet Squier was a good guitar when you first got it. My Recomendation is Gibson above all else! Top of the line Fender next with PRS not being that far behind. Do not expect low end Fenders and PRS SE's to be as good as the high dollar ones. Bang for your buck I say Ibanez. Yamaha makes quality acoustics that are hard...

I Feel I Got Bad News From My Private Teacher$10.00
Long story short, the students responded VERY positively and went on to take part in some type of regional chess tournament where they obtained spectacular results! The teacher's teaching methods may have been unorthodox, but his intentions were pure. To be able to play chess, the kids HAD to do the classwork/homework. They liked playing chess, but to do so, they first had to complete all their assignments and participate in class. It gave them self esteem which then helped propel them to attain...

Gibsons used to have a pretty good investment quality to them, but don't think so any longer. Both Gibson and PRS have more than maxed out their quality to dollar to name value imo and appreciation isn't really happening any longer, actually...

Hollow Bodies$1,100.00
anyone have any info/experience with this guitar? This one is going for $1100 w/ hard case. Felt, looked and sounded great. Evidently, it is 100% USA made in Samick's new facility in TN and only available through special order. I cant find any real info/specs/reviews online except for a short blurb on Samicks site stating that they were producing a limit series in TN. I will say it seemed nicer then the Epi Elitist I tried in another shop today. I almost walked out the door with it but decided...

Legacy Guitar Services$1.00
A: You should figure for the time it takes to ship the guitar to us—then Greg does a pick-up/drop-off run to our office on Mondays and Thursdays. You will hear from Greg within a couple days after he picks up your guitar with an estimate of the time and cost for the repairs. Then there’s the ship time back to your location. For general setups, Greg will return your guitar to us on the next drop-off date.

Gibson's big new launch$2,500.00
Have to agree with you here in spades....used to consider resale value a big deal and bought into all the Gibson pitch about it, but after buying new Gibsons and NEVER getting more than 75-80% of what I paid for them when I sold them, came to the conclusion that the resale thing is a bunch of hype at this time as the days of Gibson's (and other makes) increasing a lot or holding their purchase pricing is pretty much gone.....there are a lot of reasons for this, but that is a whole other conversation...

Who Says Guitars Are Expensive$299.00
Well, I'm no guitar snob. I have some I picked up for 35 or 40 bucks, and I have one I paid 2 grand for (it is a family heirloom. That is the only reason I bought it). It doesn't matter how much it's worth or how much you paid for it to me, just as long as you are playing guitar! In the famous words of John Mellencamp "forget all about that macho S--- and learn how to play guitar" I am a firm believer that some of the import guitars are as good as some of the Gibsons and Fenders I have played.Like...

Black Friday Deals$169.99
Just a quick note on SG's and kids. My son takes care of his stuff but has still managed to snap the neck on his Epiphone SG twice. I have almost as much in repairs as what I paid for it. If he gets and SG, make sure they get him a hard case for it, second time the neck broke, it was in a nice gig bag so the blame for that one sort of falls on me. Angus is why my son wanted an SG also and if it keeps them intersted, go for it, just remind them that the SG needs a little extra TLC.

New Guitar! Squier Bullet Strat$100.00
Here's a picture. It's not of my specific guitar, but of the same model. But mine looks like there's just a little more green mixed in with the baby blue. Sort of a pale minty blue. It's enough in between green and blue that at first I thought it might have been surf green, before being told it was daphne blue. (Surf green is also a great Fender color.) I looked on the web, but it seems both daphne blue and surf green are tricky colors to photograph accurately.

Acoustic/Electric Electronics$649.00
Friday was interesting day for me. I recieved a call that they had closed the campground that we were scheduled to go to for the holiday (due to the fires in SoCal) To make myself feel better, I took a quick trip over to Guitar Trader...much improved over GC...you could actually hear the guitar you were playing. I went and played a number of guitars, and after asking the salesperson which guitar he would choose if he had about 500 to spend, he put a Taylor 114 in my hand. It played beautifully...

Effects Pedals$300.00
The M13 has really surprised me. It is really easy to get good tones out of it because its setup like a pedal...no menus or a gazillion other things to have to go through to get a good tone....just pick the pedal you want, adjust the knobs until you get the tone you want...simple. There are at least a dozen pedals in here that I find excedingly usable....couldn't touch those 12 pedals for the $399 I paid for the M13...is it exactly like the pedals its modeling? Don't know as I have never even...

Low-Mid Price Guitars$1,500.00
I'm with Craig on the whole guitars as investment topic. I don't consider anything thats probably going to lose money an investment and that's usually what happens. There are exceptions i.e. the '59 Les Paul, but I think those are more of a status symbol than anything else. I actually sprung for one of the '59 reissues a few months ago. Nearly $6k and I wasn't impressed at all. I played it for half a day and sent it right back. My 2008 Standard looks, plays, and sounds better. Cost me a good bit...

Testimonials for Learn & Master Drums | DVD Drumming Lessons$500.00
But, you should consider this course even if your primary musical goal is something other than being a drummer. Music writers and producers can benefit, as well. My intention in taking this course was not to become a drummer, although I look forward to gaining some level of competence. I’m a songwriter looking forward to gaining control over the rhythm part of the craft. I’m not satisfied with the rigidity of electronic drums, but up until now, haven’t been able to adequately communicate what I wanted...

Gibson Lp Studio Vs Gibson Sg Standard$200.00
I should take both of your suggestions and try before I buy. Unfortunately none the music stores directly around me carry either one of those guitars. I will have to take a weekend when I'm free, and travel to the nearest Guitar center and try them both out, that is when they are both in stock at the same time. Like you guys mentioned, maybe neither one will fit me after trying them both out, or one will, and not the other, maybe I will like them both, and eventually end up with both of them down...

Osp32 Pedal Board Road Case$125.00
An Epiphone Blues Custom 30. Mine weighs 71lbs. 30W, all tube, two twelves, big transformer, 3/4" plywood case. Steve has used one on several of his vids. I wonder who he gets to help him move it around?

So I ordered a Takamine - Student Support Forum Home Page$810.00
I haven't seen or played that one. I had to go back to a 2008 price list to find it, so it's likely been out of production for a couple of years. The list was $859 (up from $810 in 2007), which means the normal hang-tag would be about $600. At $200, that's about 24% of M.S.R.P ..... very good!

Gibson Lp Studio Vs Gibson Sg Standard$249.95
I saw an ad like that on Amazon too. I checked out that link that you gave and it looks like MF added the LP studio faded in with the regular studios, but it does show the price difference between them when you click on the options in the drop drown menu. Although the one you’re referring to, along with one another that is in the faded ebony does state they are faded maple tops, which is strange unless they are from the Studio 50’s Tribute series. The ebony faded with the maple top is listed at ...
