They are JUST wooden blocks with letters and numbers in primary colors with some corresponding pictures. THEY ARE FANTASTIC. They are small, like 1.5" x 1.5" so they would pose a choking hazard for wee ones (under 18 months) but these are a great toy. They are finished,unlike the other reviewer said. NO SPLINTERS, they are painted and seem safe for me, and I have a few kiddos myself.
