Description One of pioneering director Jean-Luc Godard's most accessible films is this French spin on Dolores Hitchens' novel -Fool's Gold. It tells the tale of three disaffected youths who plan a burglary, leading to deadly results. The alienated young trio is marvelous, particularly Anna Karina, and the early scenes of their clearly overdeveloped fantasy lives are splendidly handled. Something of a companion piece to Godard's classic À Bout de Souffle, its young characters have the same odd mixture...

The Outsiders (DVD)
Drama - general DVD - For this deluxe two-disc DVD edition, director Francis Ford Coppola has added 22 minutes of deleted footage and an entire new soundtrack to his 1983 adaptation of S. E. Hintons novel about troubled teenagers growing up in Tulsa, Oklahoma, during the early '60s. Its a memorable movie, not so much for Coppolas stylized treatment of the story as for the cast, which includes so many soon-to-be movie stars, among them Matt Dillon, Patrick Swayze, Rob Lowe, Diane Lane, and, seen here as a toothy young lad, Tom Cruise. Although the movie is very much an ensemble piece, top billing and narrative viewpoint go to C. Thomas Howell, playing one of three orphaned brothers from the wrong side of tracks. He and buddy Ralph Macchio (pre-Karate Kid) belong to the Greasers, a gang of tough, poor kids headed by Dillon. Their enemies are the Socs, arrogant boys from the wealthier part of town. Ambushed by the Socs one night, Howell and Macchio fight back, and the latter ends up killing one of the attackers;

Hinton's novel struck a powerful chord with audiences, capturing the intense feelings of being caught between childhood and adulthood, and not belonging anywhere. Decades later, Coppola has revisited the film and reintegrated 22 minutes of character-enriching footage, including a new beginnning and ending more true to the book. A rousing new rock-n-roll soundtrack featuring six songs from Elvis Presley and other music greats make this new version of The Outsiders...

French New Wave master Jean-Luc Godard continues his fascination with dime store novels and American crime films with 1964's BAND OF OUTSIDERS, a free-spirited romp in the same vein as the director's breakthrough smash, BREATHLESS. More traditional than BREATHLESS in its technical execution, BAND OF OUTSIDERS sparkles with freshness and originality--it uses comical, poetic narration by Godard himself, and has a bouncy musical score by Michel Legrand. The performances from Claude Brasseur, Sami Frey...
