The United States of Wal-Mart
An irreverent, hard-hitting examination of the world's largest-and most reviled-corporation, which reveals that while Wal-Mart's dominance may be providing consumers with cheap goods and plentiful jobs, it may also be breeding a culture of discontent. It employs one of every 115 American workers. If it were a nation-state, it would be one of the world's top twenty economies. With yearly sales of nearly $260 billion and an average wage of $8 an hour, Wal-Mart represents an unprecedented-and perhaps unstoppable...

Although neither 1987's Outcry nor 1989's Any Which Way...Freedom was quite as radically revolutionary as Mystery, Mutabaruka was quickly establishing himself as both a literary and musical giant, both in Jamaica and abroad. His Reggae Sunsplash appearances in 1987 and 1988 were highly anticipated, and did not disappoint. And while Mutabaruka continued to produce or co-produce his albums, he also occasionally cut singles for other producers, including the hard-hitting "Great Kings of Africa" for...

November 07, 2005: There are a lot of things to dislike about Wal-Mart, which is why I choose not to shop there. But Mr. Dicker's book is fraught with ignorance. Nowhere is this more apparent than in Chapter 9, wherein the author feigns shock that a Democrat would be elected to congress in 1930's Texas - surely no surprise if one knows anything of the history of the American political parties. Then he goes on to cite the congressional movement against grocery giant A&P, bemoaning the...

Wal-Marts' ubiquity presents a potential problem for policymakers confronting local issues (zoning, infrastructure, taxation, etc.) which influence the location of new stores. Despite a proliferation of Wal-Mart related writing, the consensus among researchers writing peer review work is far less conclusive than either the critics or advocates of the retailer contend. This makes disentangling the effect of Wal-Mart on local economies increasing difficult. While there have been other books on Wal-Mart, none...

"The author is interested in facts. He asks the right questions and provides the answers that thorough research suggests. He surveys the weight of evidence and analysis in the existing literature, and adds some informed insights of his own. This is what good economists are supposed to do. There are no wild claims or hidden agendas here. This book is a triumph of empiricism over mysticism." - Lawrence W. Reed, President, Mackinac Center for Public Policy, Midland, Michigan

After a long tour, the band concentrated on solo projects for a couple of years. By the time of 1983's Speaking in Tongues, the band had severed its ties with Eno; the result was an album that still relied on the rhythmic innovations of Remain in Light, except within a more rigid pop-song structure. After its release, Talking Heads embarked on another extensive tour, which would turn out to be their last; it's captured on the Jonathan Demme-directed concert film Stop Making Sense. After releasing...

I'd ordered a share of Wal-Mart as we were shopping there often for Debbie's birthday in August. Not being able to wait that long I decided to give it to her for our anniversary. Deb has had cancer for 4 years and is taking chemo again. She hasn't been feeling well for the last month but when I gave her the beautifully framed share of Wal-Mart stock, she actually smiled for the first time in quite a while. I've since secured a share of McDonald's for her. I can hardly wait for the next smile.

Initially known for his work as an actor (most notably on the '90s TV drama My So-Called Life and in movies like Requiem for a Dream and Fight Club), Jared Leto also had musical ambitions. His band, 30 Seconds to Mars, debuted in 2002 with a self-titled effort featuring a post-grunge sound suggestive of groups like Chevelle and Incubus. 30 Seconds returned three years later with the platinum-selling A Beautiful Lie, an emotional album based around the concept of change that touched on metal and neo...
