Decorative art created to memorialize and commemorate death has been a part of Western culture for centuries. Extraordinarily beautiful examples of mourning art and memorial jewelry for members of royalty and the aristocracy date back to the 16th century in England and Europe. Medieval references to commemorative art predate even the extant pieces now in museums. During the Georgian and Victorian eras, outstanding pieces of mourning jewelry and artwork were found in a majority of homes in America, Britain, and...

This pin is is dome-shaped and covered with french jet "rhinestones" and decorative jappaned filagree (blackened metal). It is marked "Austria" and is probably from the 20's? It really sparkles, no damage I can see. Super pretty in that there are rounds marquis, etc. and lots of filagree. Picture doesn't do it justice as it really is covered with more stones than I'm used to seeing in a pin. Pin is 2 inches long by 1.75 inches high.

Each of these pieces is set into a silver plated Victorian filagree setting, has a cover-glass made exclusively for Westgate (as we ran out of the vintage ones, so we had to have them made especially for us). The floral beads are hand-made ceramic, one by one, and hand painted...

THE HOPE OF SALVATION ( Georgian Mourning Jewelry Locket / Pendant ): A haunting and prevalent image from the late 18 th & early 19 th Centuries is that of a woman with an anchor. Dressed in idealized attire of the Grecian style, far from pathetic, she is a female Atlas, bearing a world of grief on her slim shoulders. In this polychrome, painted on ivory, Georgian Locket the woman is leaning on a blue anchor and points up to heaven. (c. 1790) In the...

Rare swivelling Memorial ring. The top has a rectangle, outlined in seed pearls, containing plaited / braided hair of the loved one. A line of pearls, graded in size leads the eye outwards from the center on either side of the rectangle. The pearls lie in a bed of gold, sculpted flowers - tiny details. The band itself is ridged, which adds to the elegance of the ring. <P>
