Mourning Art & Jewelry

Decorative art created to memorialize and commemorate death has been a part of Western culture for centuries. Extraordinarily beautiful examples of mourning art and memorial jewelry for members of royalty and the aristocracy date back to the 16th century in England and Europe. Medieval references to commemorative art predate even the extant pieces now in museums. During the Georgian and Victorian eras, outstanding pieces of mourning jewelry and artwork were found in a majority of homes in America...

Whitby Jet (Black Gemstone Victorian Mourning Jewelry) by: Helen & Katy Muller
Whitby Jet (Black Gemstone Victorian Mourning Jewelry) by: Helen & Katy Muller

Jet, a hard, black, shiny gem closely related to coal, has been fashioned into jewelry and trinkets for generations. During the Victorian period, when the ritual surrounding death and the long mourning of Queen Victoria made black fashionable, jet became hugely popular. Although jet is found elsewhere in the world, it is the jet from Whitby that excites collectors to such an extent that even jet jewelry manufactured elsewhere is often called Whitby Jet. This book traces the history of jet and the...

Jet Mourning Jewelry
Jet Mourning Jewelry

This pin is is dome-shaped and covered with french jet "rhinestones" and decorative jappaned filagree (blackened metal). It is marked "Austria" and is probably from the 20's? It really sparkles, no damage I can see. Super pretty in that there are rounds marquis, etc. and lots of filagree. Picture doesn't do it justice as it really is covered with more stones than I'm used to seeing in a pin. Pin is 2 inches long by 1.75 inches high.

1940s Black Molded Tenite Cameo Japanned Vintage Mourning Jewelry
1940s Black Molded Tenite Cameo Japanned Vintage Mourning Jewelry

This unusual cameo is the same as that seen on page 176 of "Plastic Jewelry of the Twentieth Century" by Lillian Baker. The one in the book has the same Tenite cameo, but in a different setting. There are 4 rhinestones (one each at noon, 3, 6, and 9 o'clock), and what look like marcasites (though they may be steel) in each of the "flowers" in the setting. It may have at one time had a pendant loop on the back, but if so, the loop is no longer there. The brooch measures 1 3/4" x 1 1/2" and is...

MOURNING ON THE PEJEPSCOT
MOURNING ON THE PEJEPSCOT

"Mourning on the Pejepscot" takes a look at this region's mourning culture from its seventeenth-century settlement to the present. Structurally, this study is broken down into four major chapters: Cemeteries, Gravestones, Mourning Dress, Jewelry and Practices, and Mourning Art. Each chapter begins with an introduction of general New England practices. The balance of each chapter focuses on Pejepscot's customs. The attitudes and practices of the macrocosm (New England) and microcosm (Pejepscot) are...
