When we are satisfied they are free of salts and fine particulate matter, we dry them for mixing, packaging for resale or use in our own potting stations. Measuring 1/2" to 3/4" in diameter when expanded, these coarse coconut-bark chips create pockets within the potting mix that help keep the medium loose, promoting drainage and aeration vital to the health of orchids and tropical plants. Even though these prepackaged bales are labeled as pre-washed, you should "clean" your chips, as we do, before use.
