West German Pottery Vase 3087A
Description : This vase was made by Haldensleben, which was previously Carstens, Uffrecht (changed in 1945). That makes it an East German piece. It features a gloss orange with a textured semi-matte brown overglaze. Form number is 3087A with a height of about 10 1/2". (The orange currently looks too yellow in the picture. I'll work on that.) |

Bückeburg West German Pottery Vase
Description : The form on this one is a simple cylinder, but there's nothing simple about the three-color glaze. The color combination goes past daring but still works. In addition to the color variations, each glaze shows textural differences. The top is a smooth, glossy green with a peel mottling in the color. The middle has a light texture, and the bottom glaze is thicker than the top two with a slight curdling. |

Scheurich West German Pottery Vase 203
Description : Scheurich wasn't the boldest maker with shapes, but sometimes they simply got the shape and glaze combination matched perfectly. This is one of those times. Shape 203 is a simple cylinder form, but the proportions are on the mark. It's also a perfect form for the "heartstripe" glaze. In this case, that stripe is a royal blue bound by a volcanic - lava glaze in blues and black. Even most W. German pottery collectors still tend to overlook the ability these artists had to mix subtlety... |

Made by the Bay firm and carrying its gold paper label which reads Bay Keramik, this 8 inch tall vase is in the classical trumpet shape, with three lobes. Graflich West German Pottery Vase with unusual lava glaze
Description : Based on the unusual glaze and the clay, this vase is attributed to Gräflich Ortenberg, which was in business in Tambach, Germany from 1946-68. The vase has a blue-green glaze with patches of a black lava glaze showing through. I've seen the color combination (on another unidentified vase) but never quite this design. The clay is a dark red and height about 8". |

Scheurich Shape 267 West German Pottery Vase
Condition : very good with two minor problems as pictured. There is a pinhead sized glaze flake on one rim (just left of center in the picture) and there is one glaze miss (production flaw) under one rim (brown spot visible in upper right corner of detail shot). The price is reduced to account for these issues. Of course, all our sales are fully guaranteed. |

Large Art Pottery Vase – Germany
This beautiful antique earthen ware vase is decorated by very thick enamels, almost like cake decoration through an icing tip. The interior is clear glazed to enhance the natural pottery. The vase is 5” diameter x 8 3/4". It is in very good condition with no chips or cracks. On the bottom is stamped “Germany” in black Gothic script under a clear glaze. |

Krosselbach Artist Signed West German Pottery Vase
Description : This West German pottery Krosselbach vase is hand thrown and artist signed. The intitials are either CS or GS, but I've yet to confirm the full name. It's dated 1974. Form and glaze show a strong Japanese influence and are wonderfully subtle. In the pictures, the upper glaze looks brown, but it's softer in person. My best description is beige over taupe. |

Scheurich Vase 206 West German Pottery
Description : This example of Scheurich shape 206 shows how the designers in the West German pottery era really loved to mix textures. The top is a gloss, medium blue glaze, but that shifts to a brown glaze with a thick white mottling on top. Unfortunately, a two dimensional picture doesn't show the layers well. Height is about 10 1/2". |

Cortendorf West German Pottery Vase
Description : Cortendorf vases are a bit harder to find than most, and this one features an unusual glaze. The dark blue windows are hand outlined in slip, significantly increasing the time spent on each vase. Unfortunately, the corner of one window has flaked off, which is why the vase is in this category. Shape number appears to be 4599, and the height is about 8". |

Dümler & Breiden West German Pottery Vase
Description : The glaze is much like Ceramano Rustica, but other companies did similar work. Silberdistel released a version shortly after Ceramano, but the form on this one actually indicates a probably Dümler & Breiden origin. The quality is the same either way, excellent. The lava, volcanic glaze looks a bit too brown in the picture, although the actual glaze is more brown than previous Silberdistel versions I've seen. |

Description : This classic mid-century shape was produced at the Otto Keramik studio with the glaze by Otto Gerharz and form by Kurt Tschörner. The glaze is a soft gray and white with the incised lines that were popular at the time. Roth West German Pottery Vase 4101
Description : I always find this Roth shape 4101 a bit whimsical as well as a bit alien, and it's a great canvas for this glaze. The underglaze is a high-gloss red with this coal-like textured black "wrap". Some versions of this glaze have the bluing as seen in this photo, which I think really defines the quality of the glaze. (Versions without the bluing just don't have as much impact.) |

Description : Several companies did this type of work, including Sawa and Wekara, but this one is probably by Eiwa based on the pattern name and just a trace of a label. Otto Keramik West German Pottery Vase with Black Lava
This example combines a turquoise glaze that looks like Boch work from the 1920's with a heavily textured black lava, volcanic band that's distinctly mid century. Height is about 6 1/2", and the bottom has the usual felt. No point in removing it (very hard to do) because all you'll find is a flat bottom with white clay. The lava appears more black in person, too brownish in the pictures. |

Gerhard Liebenthron West German Pottery Studio Vase
Description : This artist signed West German studio pottery vase was made by Gerhard Liebenthron in 1978. (The date could be 1970 since the number is a bit hard to read, but I think it's 78.) It features a green and black glaze with a textured surface. The result is primitive looking in a way that requires surpising skill. The vase is handthrown. Liebenthron is getting more and more attention among collectors, including museums. |
