The Picture of Dorian Gray" by Oscar Wilde
The Picture of Dorian Gray" by Oscar Wilde

The Picture of Dorian Gray was arch-aesthete Oscar Wilde's only novel, although he wrote a number of poems and children's stories before it was published in 1890 (in Lippincott's Magazine) and became a very successful playwright in the 1890s themselves. Like much of his work and life, the Gothic melodrama Dorian Gray was controversial. In his preface to the book he famously wrote that, "There is no such thing as a moral or immoral book. Books are well written or badly written. That is all". The novel...

The Picture of Dorian Gray: A Graphic Novel

"Youth! Youth! There is absolutely nothing in the world worth having but youth!""The Picture of Dorian Gray" is a graphic adaptation of Oscar Wilde's classic work, stunningly re-imagined by writer Ian Edginton and artist I.N.J. Culbard. This Gothic morality tale is the story of a man who, taken by his own beauty, pledges his soul in a desperate bid for eternal youth. But when his wish is granted, things go terribly wrong. A painting of Dorian begins to age in his place, while Dorian himself becomes...

The Picture of Dorian Gray
The Picture of Dorian Gray

The Picture of Dorian Gray was a succes de scandale. Early readers were shocked by its hints at unspeakable sins and the book was later used as evidence against Wilde at the Old Bailey in 1895. Enthralled by his own exquisite portrait, Dorian Gray makes a Faustian bargain to sell his soul in exchange for eternal youth and beauty. Under the influence of Lord Henry Wotton, he is drawn into a corrupt double life, where he is able to indulge his desires while remaining a gentleman in the eyes of polite...

Wilde's first and only published novel recounts the story of handsome Dorian Gray who upon having his portrait painted desires that it will age and grow ugly while he may remain eternally beautiful. The painting, which reflects each of Gray's sins and transgressions in its hideousness, haunts him until it finally becomes unbearable. In this dark tale of duplicity and mortality, Wilde creates a world where art and reality collide.

This chilly adaptation of Oscar Wilde's novel stars Hurd Hatfield as Dorian Gray, a handsome young Victorian gentleman who remains eternally young while a portrait of him grows old and bears the ugly scars of his vile undertakings. The otherwise black-and-white horror film is notable for its lavish Technicolor finale--perhaps helping it score its Academy Award for cinematography. Angela Lansbury gained an Oscar nod for her role as an innocent singer whom Dorian corrupts.

The Picture of Dorian Gray

Admired by all, young Dorian Gray apparently has everything anyone could wish for. But while the man never shows his age or the ravages of his amoral lifestyle, his portrait grows into a hideous visage of depravity and decay. Atypical of his drawing room comedies, Oscar Wilde's 1890 novel is a masterly study of intrigue, moral corruption, and murder, styled after the "decadent" French fiction of the era and the theatrical violence of the grand guignol , and was inspired by an actual episode with...

"Each book opens with a page of vital statistics: the “baby name,” “number in litter,” “weight at birth,” “age of independence,” “adult weight,” and “life expectancy.” The books then go on to describe where the animals live and their predators and conclude with a “Fun Fact.” The photography is excellent. Sidebars on some pages include more facts or reinforce the text. The covers of the books have adorable pictures of the baby animals. If short, factual titles on specific Australian animals are needed...

A lush, cautionary tale of a life of vileness and deception or a loving portrait of the aesthetic impulse run rampant? Why not both? After Basil Hallward paints a beautiful, young man's portrait, his subject's frivolous wish that the picture change and he remain the same comes true. Dorian Gray's picture grows aged and corrupt while he continues to appear fresh and innocent. After he kills a young woman, "as surely as if I had cut her little throat with a knife," Dorian Gray is surprised to find...

Under normal circumstances, I don't like old novels about the interior struggles of people with self-destructive behavior. Nor do I like audiobook readers who offer us goofy voices, rather than just read the book. This book turns both of my prejudices on their heads. Wilde has written so many telling and witty turns of phrase, even the subject matter didn't bog me down. Furthermore, the reader's genuine acting talent made the characters come to life without breaking me out of the narrative.

CLASSIC COLLECTION: When The Picture of Dorian Gray was first published in 1891, it evoked a tremendous amount of hostile criticism, in most part due to its immoral content. Oscar Wilde was identified with the "art for art's sake" movement of the nineteenth century which did not subordinate art to ethical instruction. However, this novel is indeed a morality tale about the hazards of egotistical self-indulgence.

The Picture of Dorian Gray

Oscar Wilde's story of a fashionable young man who sells his soul for eternal youth and beauty is one of his most popular works. Written in Wilde's characteristically dazzling manner, full of stinging epigrams and shrewd observations, the tale of Dorian Gray's moral disintegration caused something of a scandal when it first appeared in 1890. Wilde was attacked for his decadence and corrupting influence, and a few years later the book and the aesthetic/moral dilemma it presented became issues in the...

The Picture of Dorian Gray (Paperback)

Since its first publication in 1890, Oscar Wilde's only novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray, has remained the subject of critical controversy. Acclaimed by some as an instructive moral tale, it has been denounced by others for its implicit immorality. After having his portrait painted, Dorian Gray is captivated by his own beauty. Tempted by his world-weary friend, decadent friend Lord Henry Wotton, he wished to stay young forever and pledges his very soul to keep his good looks. As Dorian's slide into...

Entranced by the perfection of his recently painted portrait, the youthful Dorian Gray expresses a wish that the figure on the canvas could age and change in his place. When his wish comes true, the portrait becomes his hideous secret as he follows a downward trajectory of decadence and cruelty that leaves its traces only in the portrait’s degraded image. Wilde’s unforgettable portrayal of a Faustian bargain and its consequences is narrated with his characteristic incisive wit and diamond-sharp prose...
