The Picture of Dorian Gray" by Oscar Wilde
The Picture of Dorian Gray" by Oscar Wilde

The Picture of Dorian Gray was arch-aesthete Oscar Wilde's only novel, although he wrote a number of poems and children's stories before it was published in 1890 (in Lippincott's Magazine) and became a very successful playwright in the 1890s themselves. Like much of his work and life, the Gothic melodrama Dorian Gray was controversial. In his preface to the book he famously wrote that, "There is no such thing as a moral or immoral book. Books are well written or badly written. That is all". The novel...

What an exhilarating book! The characters are rich and the writing is brilliantly witty and beautiful. Oscar Wilde's exploration of the depths of human depravity is genius. There are so many timelessly provocative themes running through this work - the fleetingness of youth, the superficiality of beauty, the power of the ego, the insidious danger of vanity, the importance of accountability and conscience. Lord Henry's aphorisms are as astute as they are irreverent. Be careful what you wish for!

Youth! Youth! There is absolutely nothing in the world worth having but youth! The Picture of Dorian Gray is a graphic adaptation of Oscar Wildes classic work, stunningly re-imagined by writer Ian Edginton and artist I.N.J. Culbard. This Gothic morality tale is the story of a man who, taken by his own beauty, pledges his soul in a desperate bid for eternal youth. But when his wish is granted, things go terribly wrong. A painting of Dorian begins to age in his place, while Dorian himself becomes a...

The Picture of Dorian Gray

The Picture of Dorian Gray was a succes de scandale. Early readers were shocked by its hints at unspeakable sins and the book was later used as evidence against Wilde at the Old Bailey in 1895. Enthralled by his own exquisite portrait, Dorian Gray makes a Faustian bargain to sell his soul in exchange for eternal youth and beauty. Under the influence of Lord Henry Wotton, he is drawn into a corrupt double life, where he is able to indulge his desires while remaining a gentleman in the eyes of polite...

Wilde's first and only published novel recounts the story of handsome Dorian Gray who upon having his portrait painted desires that it will age and grow ugly while he may remain eternally beautiful. The painting, which reflects each of Gray's sins and transgressions in its hideousness, haunts him until it finally becomes unbearable. In this dark tale of duplicity and mortality, Wilde creates a world where art and reality collide.

"Each of these volumes addresses a specific part of the expedition and concludes with a cliff-hanger ending. Corps is the most aptly named as it covers the intentions of Thomas Jefferson, his close relationship with Meriwether Lewis, and the goals of the expedition. There is little that is new here, but readers will learn that the group traveled with the most advanced weapons of the time, and the book provides a good overview of how and why the project was undertaken. Missouri River makes mention...

The Picture of Dorian Gray

Published just before he reached the height of his fame, Wilde's only full-length novel has endured as surely as the great plays for which he is celebrated. By exploring the actions of a young man who makes a pact to retain his outward beauty at the expense of inward corruption—symbolized in a portrait that ages as he remains unchanged—Wilde achieved a seminal novel that is part fable, part comedy of manners, and part treatise on the nature of art and beauty. As the figure in Dorian's portrait changes...

About this book ‘Oh, if it were only the other way! If the picture could change, and I could be always what I am now! Why did you paint it? It will mock me some day – mock me horribly!’ Oscar Wilde’s tale of the young man who sells his soul for eternal youth is one of the best-loved classics of the 19th century; its central image of the ageing portrait one of the most famous in all literature. When Dorian Gray first sees his likeness, painted by Basil Hallward, he is awestruck by its beauty. Influenced...

Under normal circumstances, I don't like old novels about the interior struggles of people with self-destructive behavior. Nor do I like audiobook readers who offer us goofy voices, rather than just read the book. This book turns both of my prejudices on their heads. Wilde has written so many telling and witty turns of phrase, even the subject matter didn't bog me down. Furthermore, the reader's genuine acting talent made the characters come to life without breaking me out of the narrative.

The Picture of Dorian Gray

CLASSIC COLLECTION: When The Picture of Dorian Gray was first published in 1891, it evoked a tremendous amount of hostile criticism, in most part due to its immoral content. Oscar Wilde was identified with the "art for art's sake" movement of the nineteenth century which did not subordinate art to ethical instruction. However, this novel is indeed a morality tale about the hazards of egotistical self-indulgence.
