The Cremator ( Spalovac mrtvol )
Juraj Herz's film The Cremator has been described in many ways - as surrealist-inspired horror, as expressionist fantasy, as a dark and disturbing tale of terror. This brilliantly chilling film, a mix of Dr Strangelove and Repulsion, is set in Prague during the Nazi occupation. It tells the story of Karl Kopfrkingl (Rudolf Hrusínský), a professional cremator, for whom the political climate allows free rein to his increasingly deranged impulses for the 'salvation of the world'. |

CREMATOR, THE
Juraj Herz's darkly expressionistic horror film is set during the Nazi occupation of Prague, where professional cremator Karl Kopfrkingl (Rudolf Hrusinsky) is guided by the belief that he's saving the souls of the bodies that he burns. The depraved atmosphere of his occupied city causes Kopfrkingl to grow convinced that he can bring about the salvation of all mankind by turning the world into a giant crematorium. Vlasta Chramostova and Ilja Prachar co-star in a chilling drama with bold thematic implications... |

The Cremator
Burning human bodies sets their souls free--at least according to an eager crematorium worker, Karl (Rudolf Hrusinsky), in 1930s Prague. Although his odd beliefs have little outlet in reality, that all changes when the Nazis invade Czechoslovakia, setting loose his nightmarish desires on victims that grow to include his own family. Released in 1968, this creepy black comedy remains a powerful document of the thematic and visual inventiveness of the Czech New Wave. |
