Beautiful 8”-10” (20-25 cm) velvety crimson blooms on 5’-8’ (150-240 cm) stems. Culture: Easy to grow, plants thrive even in poor soil with moderate moisture. Sow seed after all danger of frost has passed in a sunny area. Deadheading spent blooms prolongs blooming season. Flowers are excellent for cutting. Boil stems 1½ minutes for longer lasting arrangements.

I loved these sunflowers. They were easy to plant and bloomed beautifully. There was an abundance of flowers, so I was able to cut plenty for my home and also leave plenty to decorate the outdoors. The only drawback is that they are an annual.

Velvet Queen sunflowers have a stunning color of deep red that fades outward from its black center to tips that are splashed with orange. Helianthus 'Lemon Queen' is our favorite selection of the naturally-occurring midwestern US hybrid of Helianthus pauciflorus var. subrhomboideus x Helianthus tuberosus. In spring, Helianthus 'Lemon Queen' begins its climb to the skies and only stops when it reaches heights between 6' and 8' feet tall. In our garden, the sturdy stems are covered with 2" wide, soft lemon-yellow flowers in July and August. This clumping back-of-the-border sunflower is tolerant of either moist or very dry soils.
