1/100 British Sopwith Camel
The British Camel was credited with destroying more enemy aircraft (1,294) than any other fighter plane of WWI. Although the Camel was responsive and maneuverable, it was tricky to fly because most of the weight was centrally located. One problem of the F-1's was that its rotary engine lost power at higher altitudes, thus reducing performance. The Camel had engines ranging from 110 hp to 150 hp. |

Sopwith Camel B7270
The first aircraft of the collection is the one that became famous because it was the machine that Captain Roy Brown used to chase Baron von Reichtofen over the Somme on 21st April 1918. A flight from which the Baron did not return. Brown had fired at the Baron's Dr1, and upon landing was told that he had shot it down. (This machine was then flown by Capt. O. W. Redgate, who scored two more victories in it that same month.) There were 3 white bars on the fuselage sides, one ahead of where a roundel... |

Sopwith Pup | Aircraft
The only other unit to fly the type, No. 46 Squadron, was reequipped with it in April 1917. In spite of having exactly half its horse-power, the Pup was superior to the opposing Albatros D-III at high altitudes, because of its lighter wing-loading. McCudden wrote: ... . at 16,000 feet the Albatros Scout began to find its ceiling just where the Pup was still speedy and controllable.' There were not, however. enough Pups available to overcome the general German superiority. |

Sopwith F.1 Camel
An agile, highly maneuverable biplane, the Sopwith Camel accounted for more aerial victories than any other Allied aircraft during World War I. Credited with destroying 1,294 enemy aircraft, it was called the Camel due to the humped fairing over its twin machine guns. Much like a real camel, this aircraft could turn and bite you. Noted for its tendency to kill inexperienced flyers, many pilots feared its vicious spin characteristics. Until sufficient speed was developed during takeoff, Camel pilots... |
