Dating back to the 19th century, the pie safe served as a storage unit for food. The trademark perforated panels, typically made of tin, provided ventilation for the edible contents as well as protection from flies and other insects. The perforations created sharp indented edges. The tin panels were traditionally set so these edges were on the outside of the tin, in order to frustrate crawling bugs from entering the pie safe.
