Here is a nice canteen and cup combination from 1949 and later from West Germany to the modern reunified German Republic. The unit combines a two piece mess kit and canteen. It is held together with a leather strap with a snap fastener for connection to a belt or back pack.It appears that the Germans may have modeled this after their WW 2 mess kit and canteen, widening the mouth of the canteen and making it larger and eliminating the wool cover. Here is an original German army officer saber from the 2nd World war. This is the pattern that is known as the "Dovehead" style officer's saber.
