Melon 'Charentais
'Charentais' is the melon grown in 'melon country' all over the south of France, particularly in Provence around the town of Cavaillon, the melon capital of the country. This archi-classic cantaloupe has bright orange, sugary, succulent flesh with a rich essence-of-melon perfume. Ideal in desserts and as an accompaniment to Parma ham. Pinch the stems for earlier fruiting, and, for better flavor, avoid irrigating as the fruits ripen. |

In Continuous Container Gardens, garden designers Sara Begg Townsend and Roanne Robbins have teamed up to offer an innovative system for creating stylish containers that change with the seasons. Using an unusual array of plants, Townsend and Robbins begin with a main stage plant—a woody plant garden ornament, or eye-catching perennial. Then they add a secondary player for texture and variety. As the seasons change, they show how easy it is to swap in and out a supporting cast of plants for a dynamic... |

Charentais Melon (Cucumis melo)
It's just the thing you were looking for! Charentais have thin smooth skin with light green stripes that mature to a creamy yellow. The orange flesh is fine-textured, delightfully scented and very sweet. Plant in the spring, 1 to 2 weeks before the last frost or when soil temperatures begin to warm up. Charentalis is a type of true cantaloupe from Europe. The Melon Charentais, 'Cucumis melo', is the favorite melon in France. What Americans call cantaloupes are actually muskmelons. It has a mouth... |

Charentias Melon Seeds
This well known French melon variety is world famous for its dark orange, sweet and fragrant flesh. It grows well even in cooler areas. Fruits are smooth-skinned and weigh about 2 lbs. You won't find Charentais in your grocery store -- it's thin skin and high sugar content make it fragile to ship when ripe. Enjoy its vine-ripened perfection straight from your garden. If starting seeds indoors, don't move out until late spring has stabilized. Allow 2' between seedlings. Can be direct... |

D'Alger Melon
I planted this and the Charentais. Possibly D'Alger suffered from the comparison, since Charentais was far and away the most delicious melon I've tasted. But even allowing for the competition, D'Alger didn't have a lot of flesh - there's a very large cavity inside - the color was pale, and the taste was fairly wooden. Makes for an interesting color/texture in the melon patch, but I wouldn't plant it again.. |
