Melon 'Charentais
'Charentais' is the melon grown in 'melon country' all over the south of France, particularly in Provence around the town of Cavaillon, the melon capital of the country. This archi-classic cantaloupe has bright orange, sugary, succulent flesh with a rich essence-of-melon perfume. Ideal in desserts and as an accompaniment to Parma ham. Pinch the stems for earlier fruiting, and, for better flavor, avoid irrigating as the fruits ripen.

D'Alger Melon
I planted this and the Charentais. Possibly D'Alger suffered from the comparison, since Charentais was far and away the most delicious melon I've tasted. But even allowing for the competition, D'Alger didn't have a lot of flesh - there's a very large cavity inside - the color was pale, and the taste was fairly wooden. Makes for an interesting color/texture in the melon patch, but I wouldn't plant it again..
